Well, personally I check a bag.

BUT if you want to try to do carry-on only you need to downsize everything.

And only *gel or liquids* need to be in the quart bag (solid stick deodorant doesn't, dry shampoo doesn't, for example).

For 10 days I would only need 1 oz. @ of shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, etc. I decant my regular products into the smallest travel sized container. And a dozen+ of those little bottles easily fit in a 1 qt. ziplock bag.

I think you're making this more difficult than it needs to be:

Why not simply pack one 1 oz. plastic bottle of your own shampoo?

I agree with suze and easy solutions may be to 1) check your bag with some of the toiletries, or 2) adjust how you do things so you can leave out products that don't fit and can't be decanted into small bottles, such as aerosols. Just buy a small hairspray at your destination & toss it when you pack to come home. Or 3) wear a hat.

I have found that if I transfer some liquids from the little bottles to sealed "snack" plastic bags, they take up less room.

My conclusion is regardless of the fact that YOU may have gotten away with it in the past, it doesn't follow the rules and regulations. So nothing to be recommending other people try.

You can fit something like 12-15 1-oz. bottles into an allowable Quart ziplock baggies, so I'm just not understanding the "frustration" of our OP.

NewBe -- NOT that you'd ever believe me . . . But I but you have a bone you want to gnaw . . . here goes.

Have been giving these classes since the late 90's -- used to give them 12-15 times a year but now that I'm traveling out of the country more only about 6 X a year. They mostly have 50 to 100 participants -- but three at major travel shows have had over 250 in attendance.

So in rough numbers approx 14,000 total (not counting the three times I've been on local TV morning shows)

Now get off my back.

To answer the OP, I have never had any trouble getting my 3 oz liquids into a 1Quart baggie for six week long international trips.Buy travel sizes and buy larger size products at your destination if you must have them.

Very entertaining thread! What kind of pins are you picturing, newbe? I'm torn between picturing those little badge pins some organizations "award" or a giant sewing pin sticking out of them like a voodoo doll or maybe a map pin.

OP- best suggestion I have is to repack it like a puzzle. Make sure you have no wated space. Sometimes it is as simple as changing the shape of a container. I can get everything to fit, but I usually don't bother because repackaging my expensive face cream is a pain. I wish the company made travel size. To be honest, like thursdaysd, I usually end up checking. It's well worth the money to not deal with it on layovers, and I always end up on very crowded flights or the tiny planes where my bag doesn't fit in the overhead bins.

Most TSA agents do not count contact fluid as medical necessity. I've tried it a few times. Don't understand why not, though; my eye paraphernelia is certainly a necessity in terms of not being a danger to myself or others

Anyone have any tried and true tips to share? Mine would be to use a hard sided. suitcase with expansion zippers. I can fit pretty much anything into my carryon that way. My spare day pack often becomes my "purse". Had one friend tell me it was like travelling with Mary Poppins-- but it's a little less impressive to my family, who all know why. I like to shop! I've tried the buy it when you get there approach that janisj champions but not a fan. I love new drugstores, but I really don't enjoy the mystery reaction my skin may have or trying to find a drugstore in a strange city after a long flight!

Reread your post and thought of something else, too! Can you get face wash in a bar form? It lasts longer and doesn't have to go in your qt bag.

I have a travel programme too which is putting my hand in my pocket and coughing up the dosh needed to pay for checked luggage, then I can take all I need with me without having to spend vacation time buying basic toiletries locally (expensive in the Caribbean for instance), or pouring stuff into ziplock bags or any other nonsense. I do not like or use hotel shampoos or soaps.

I find this travel programme works well for me, I don't have to fight for space in the overhead, I don't have to wheel a suitcase airside and when picking up luggage on the other side, waiting for it is a small price to pay for convenience and having enough clothes with me to change daily if not more without frequenting a laundrette plus I save time and money by not having to take a class in packing.

I don't have a website -- on purpose. Back when I promoted the course I had to turn down more dates than I could fulfill.

As it happens, I gave a session this morning at one of our local libraries. They have a regular Friday morning adult program and typically 15 to 30 max attend. As usual I figured they underestimated - so I brought 55 sets of handouts . . . and 82 showed up. They had to turn people away due to the room capacity - the library manager estimates another 15-20 were turned away. The library staff scrambled to make more handouts during the class.

I think that is enough about my program -- I'll leave it to NewBe and those who know better, to help the OP . . .

But to each his own: I remember an early trip (90's) with a friend who was not comfortable with small amounts. The week before we left, she went to Target and bought <b>full-sized</b> bottles of every product she used.

Her thinking was she'd have plenty for the one-week trip and then be well-supplied at home upon return.

And FTR, I think Janisj always gives sound advice - we're all free to take it or leave it.

Oh thanks, Whathello; I learned a new phrase!

The 3-1-1 bag is packed for tomorrow, as describe above. Carry-on works well for my travel style.

I have rolled the clothing and am using 2 packing cubes (undies and clothes). Deciding about bringing travel umbrella as rain is expected for my one day in Basel and a day in Venice.

Still deciding on black vs. blue jeans.
