I would probably just try calling some of the hotels and asking. You generally have to call directly to the hotel since central reservations does not do this type of thing.
There is both a Shearton and Westin near the airport with a free shuttle and I know in other cities they do "day rooms" But every hotel chain has a BIG presence there so pick your favorite and give it a try!

the hotel shuttles there are very convenient - more so than other airports. I just went to my favorite brand (Courtyard I believe) and got a room - I think they charged me a normal nights rate - but it was still a good deal in my mind to get out of the airpot and sleep on a real bed...

The Travelodge offers day rates (8 am - 8 pm) for $49.95.
I stayed there once (overnight) and felt a wee bit uncomfortable as a single female traveler (exterior doors to the rooms) but it worked in a pinch.

I'd guess other airports near LAX would offer day rates, just call and ask.

In April 2009, when we had a long layover (10 hours), we used the computers at LAX to secure a last minute day rate at a Days Inn for $1o per hour. The free hotel shuttle got us there and back. Woth every penny.
