I've always travelled spring or autumn before but this winter I'm flying between Chicago and Seoul, both cold weather cities.

Do you keep your overcoat with you, perhaps in the overhead compartment or check it somehow? Any advice appreciated ~ thank you.

What airline are you flying on? I have found that on a lot of the foreign airlines, there is plenty of room in the overhead binds. What class are you flying? I was at the Seoul airport last Christmas and New Year's and it was cool in the airport but I had a sweater. I would keep my coat either in my carry-on or check it in the baggage.

Thanks Wally. It's my first time on Asiana - economy. I'm hoping to travel light, as they say, and my wool overcoat would completely fill either a carry-on or a checked piece of luggage. I'll hope for generous overhead bins!

Personally I'd never put a coat in a suitcase - I travel carry-on only, carry a overcoat when needed and stow it on top of my rollaboard in the overhead bin.

I like travelling with a knee-length down coat because a) it squishes up small; b) it doesn't pick up lint like a wool coat does; and c) most importantly, it doubles as a pillow-like blanket. I can easily stuff it in an overhead bin, but I often just keep in the seat with me.

I travel with a pashmina shawl, which is my all purpose wrap/plane blanket, etc. If I'm leaving from/heading to a cold climate, I take a fleece jacket that easily fits into my carry on. I prefer to layer. But then again, I tend to get hot rather than cold.

Coats can go in the overhead but only after all carry on cases are there. Or be prepared to have your coat squished into the back (which is fine if you put it there behind your own carry on but not someone else smooshing it).

I try to stuff my coat into my carry-on bag after I board. Sometimes it fits, sometimes not and I need to squish it in the overhead. I never put it in my checked bag though - Murphy's law says my bag (and coat) would not arrive with me at the cold weather destination.

If I'm traveling to a really cold destination, I ALWAYS carry on my coat. Whether it fits in my bag or I have to wear it, there is no way I'd want to rick having it lost in transit.

Definitely just wear your coat on the plane (don't try to pack it). You can either keep it in your lap, fold it and tuck it under the seat in front of you, or put it into an overhead bin.
