One of the reasons I like Alaska Airlines is that you can pay for space available upgrades to 1st class up to 24 hours in advance. The cost is $50 per 1,250 miles (one-way). I think your family member would fit relatively comfortably into a 1st class seat. The upgrades are available only with "paid" tickets, not award seats.

even if they do have a policy, wouldn't it have to go by weight, regardless of height? I don't think 250 lbs would be even close to any limit. I've known plenty of people who weigh close to or more than that who have flown on regular tickets.

Width must be more important than height or weight. If you can put a small child (from your party, not one you enlist in the airport) in the adjacent seat, an overflow would not matter.

She may need a seatbelt extended - and this is always embarassing for people. Have her ask flight attendant for one quietly as she boards so she does not have to announce to entire cabin that she is too big for seatbelt.
