Yes, that's right. My Fico scored went down bc I closed an old cc (over 10 years). So if you haven't done so...downgrade you card to a no-fee card(usually same #) and then make sure you use it every year or so(depending on your card) to extend the exp. date. Canceling a new card does not really low your score too much, although it can. Bc FIco is calculated among other things, your total cc limit divided by actual use. So the lower the ratio, the higher the Fico...you're more trustworthy and have ability to pay.

pat, if you're still here, the answer to your question is to call and request to cancel your account. when they ask why you're cancelling, tell them because of the yearly fee and you don't need it anymore. 99% chance they will waive the fee, BUT BEWARE, they might cancel it. Don't do this if you really can't stand to lose the card.
