I was considering purchasing a flight with Delta using miles and was curious if you can then pay to upgrade that ticket. This seems backwards, I've only done it the other way around before.

I've never heard of this but I am not a SkyPesos member (that's what a lot of insiders call Delta's SkyMiles program.) My gut says that sure, they'd happily sell you a business class upgrade - for the price of a business class ticket, then they'd refund your miles. If (as I suspect) you're looking for a way to get a business class seat on the cheap, I wouldn't hold out much hope. A phone call to Delta customer service will sort out the question pronto

I'm not familiar with Delta's program. However, with United, I did what you're suggesting by buying extra miles to make it to the business class level. It was way cheaper than buying J outright.

You can sometimes pay to upgrade a flight bought with miles but you can't initiate it. You can only do it if they offer you a chance to upgrade, then you should have options tor payment. This should show in the MyTrips section of your acct.
