Best airport in world? Everyone votes!

A simple poll, no more and no less. From your perspective, what is the best airport in the world? If not an USA airport what is your favorite American airport as well? An anecdote or reason would enliven the discussion.

My vote? Going from worst to first----Detroit (the new mid field terminal)!! It is primarily a Northwest Airline facility (called World Gateway or something) but a couple other airlines use it as well. Clean, well laid out, easy to traverse, diversity of shops. Some airlines go to the old terminal but that is scheduled for a similar redo but not as grand in scale.

For a smaller airport I would pick Savannah, Georgia. Clean, very easy to use--arrival--luggage--rental car.

Your choices??

These polls serve no useful purpose.

What they do result in is all kinds of cities being posed, then when someone does a search for "west podunk" they get a pagefull of these stupid polls.

I have no problem when someone asks for "the best seafood restuarant in Boston" - USEFUL information, but why the "Best airport in world?" -- am I gonna travel somewhere else (Savannah)because Bobo thinks it's the best?

Fodors should just purge these threads as soon as they're created.

The above post clearly illustrates a total misunderstanding of the internet and the purpose of message boards. Your definition of "useful information" is mine? I am not going to Boston in the forseeable future therefore all "Best seafood restaurants in Boston" should be purged!!!

You need to relax, "duh!", and enjoy life a little more. Just perhaps you are going to the wrong airports and getting to streesed out? If you develop a little more tolerance you might even make more friends!!!! And that would be nice!

If you don't know of a good airport then put that down. Everybody's opinion is important here!

Why are good airports an important topic? Besides the fact that everyone has an opinion it does, on some level, create a competitive atmosphere. Competition ultimately raises "the bar" and service/product improves FOR EVERYONE. Understand "duh!"???? Airports are often reflective of civic pride and commitment to the community. Geez "duh!" I could go on and on with why this poll is important. No it will not find the cure for a disease--but it is not intended to. I hope you learned something!!!

Bobo,

Savannah is a great pick. It is easy to use, has multiple airline service, parking is close and cheap. Security is quick, and there are 2 or 3 food sources, plus papers and magazines.
I thought the airport on Virgin Gorda was a good one, too. Maybe less service, airline-wise, but having everything, and I mean everything (except the restrooms) in one room makes traffic patterns simple.

On the other end of the equation, I'd have to say Montego Bay's Sangster Int'l is pretty poorly laid out. It might have been something 30 years ago, but time has passed it buy.

Duh, if you don't find this thread fulfilling, just skip it and move on to the best cod in Boston thread.

Bobo: I have to agree, for simplicity and overall ease, Savannah's 10-gate facility is quite passenger friendly! My other option would be Paris/Charles de Gaulle 2 because when you park your car at CDG, you can literally see the tail of the airplanes which means you are only steps away from your flight! Now that is clever! And, CDG offers a nice selection of shops and dining beyond security which helps to pass the time away! As for 'duh', Get a life.

too hard to chose ONE best airport. i have a few favs:

north america - vancouver - bright and airy design, cool northwest indian art, one of the most relaxing terminals i've been in. in the u.s. specifically, i also like washington's rr national airport. very nice.

asia - hong kong - superb architecture, love the way ground transportation is integrated into the terminal design. seoul's new incheon airport and singapore run a close second for design and efficiency (for shopping, singapore is second to none).

europe - sorry eye spy - hate schipol (probably because i've tended to fly in very early in the morning, and for me, NOTHING looks good at 5am on a winter day). cdg's new terminal is cool, but for my money, i'd choose oslo's airport: cool mod scandinavian interior design; can walk out the terminal right to the train that will take you to the center of town. what more can you ask for?

I loved the Hong Kong airport. GREAT shopping, a train to take you to the far out gates. And if you are lucky enough to go business or first class on Cathay Pacific, they have the best club lounge with wonderful food, showers, a spa, etc. Singapore airport is nice too but I prefer Hong Kong!

In the USA, White Plains-Westchester county: New York without the hassle!

I like your question. My home base airport is Sacramento, CA. Very nice, clean, and easy to use. It's not as exciting as the Bay Area Airports, but it doesn't have their delays or hassles either. The worst experiences I've had at the airport would most definitely be at JFK. I enjoy flying, but that airport is definitely not user friendly. Newark is so much nicer, and just as far if your plans are in Manhattan.

I remain unchanged in my position that making the category "in the world" serves no useful purpose.

I'll grant that a question like "Midway or O'Hare", "Savannah or Charleston", or "which NYC area airport" is of significance, since those are the choices one actually encounters, but I doubt anyone plans travel around the airports, but instead, use the airports to get to their destination. If your destination is Kansas City, and you're flying from BWI, you probably don't give a rat's ass about how good the Honolulu airport is, or isn't.

This type of thread is very valuable. Say I need to go to Jakarta. It's nice to be able to learn about the airports in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and others to decide where a layover may be the most enjoyable.

The worset airport for travel currenlty is Toronto Pearson, When you arrive by an international flight and need a domestic you have to go half way across the airport, directions are not well marked as well in the international Immigration Hall it is always slow.

The best Airports in Canada are Vancouver it is awesome well organised, I was stranded there over September 11th. 5 days in total. The service I received was excellent. The Hotel there is execellent I do believe it is a Fairmont WOW.
The other aiport is Calgary in ALberta, It has a spa, and great services.
