AAdvantage - Double elite qualifying miles

I was just checking aa.com, there is a promotion where aadvantage members can earn double qualifying miles until June 15.

What's the catch? I spoke to aa, and they cannot explain the details of the offer, which booking classes qualify and which don't, if code shares qualify, (the aa agent told me they do, the website says they do not), etc.

Has aa had this offer in the past? This is the first time I've heard of this.

What experience do fodorites have with this aa offer?

Thanks.

I have no experience with the AA offer but am enjoying the double EQM offer that United has going. United has had similar offers in the past. From that experience (assuming it would translate to AA) I would say: read the details of the offer at the aa website and forget what a person tells you. You can expect that any booking class that normally earns EQMs will qualify for this offer provided that the flight is on AA or American Eagle.

Expect that a JAL flight number, operated by JAL, won't earn double EQM. Expect that "JAL 5555 operated by American Airlines" won't earn double EQM. Expect that "JAL 124 operated by JAL" doesn't qualify. "AA 5554 operated by JAL" doesn't qualify. But AA 123 operated by AA does.

IIRC this is a small incentive to pacify AA loyalists due to the MD80 fiasco a few weeks ago.

I think I got an email from AA inviting me to register

Here's the link to AA website

http://tinyurl.com/5oj7qf

or check AA -> advantage -> bonus offers -> airline

"... American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection marketed and operated flights ..."

I guess that the term "marketed" is what excludes "JAL 5555 operated by AA"? It is JAL marketed? but AA operated so doesn't qualify.

There;s really no "catch." As long as it is an aa flight (I believe even if it's operated by a codeshare partner but listed as an AA flight #), and as long as you normally will earn the miles, you WILL earn the double EQM. Codeshare flights do not qualify if it doesn't have an AA flight #. FYI, the bonus miles only count for EQM, but not RDM.

Go ahead and sign up. It can't hurt. It covers all flights you take (or took) between April 16 and June 15, so if you flew, say, a couple of weeks ago and sign up now, it would still count. Just register by June 15.

Codeshares do not count. Must be sold as an AA flight and operated by AA.

Remember: The double miles count you toward elite status faster, but you still just get the normal "single" amount of miles in your miles account.

I specificially planned a trip around this. I was going to take it in July, but decided to move it up to early June.
