747 from SFO to ORD?
My mom just wrote to tell me that she flew on a 747 from SFO to ORD on United yesterday. Is that possible? Why would United operate such a large jet for such a short flight? I fly LAX - ORD all the time and have never flown on a large craft such as that.

Actually, UA139 is not continued onto Asia. But this flight is always on a large widebody - sometimes 744, sometimes 777 or 763.
Both ORD and SFO are major hubs for UA's Asian operations, so it's not usual that they schedule flights to move those big birds between those two airports.
On the other hand, LAX is not a major UA gateway for its Asian flights. LAX-NRT only.

interestingly, i went online the following morning and tracked the flight and it *was* a 747!
more interestingly, my husband and i were driving off on the highway after dropping my mom off and we saw a 747 landing and he said "that's probably your mom's plane coming in" and i replied, "no way, they would never use a 747 between SFO and ORD."
