I'd like to take my family (with 2 kids ages 4 & 6) to Tunisia for a week in late May. We're interested in seeing some of Tunis, Carthage, the ruins, the medinas, etc., but also in lazing about on the beach. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts regarding at which region we should stay? Hammamet, Sousse, La Marsa, etc?

We generally shy away from overly developed tourist resorts, but we do appreciate that they offer good tourist services and security. Ideally, we'd be staying at a place with lots of local flavor, but in a nice hotel with good service. By the beach, of course.

I haven't been there myself, but was googling about it. Apparently, there is this underground hotel (very basic and very cheap) that Luke Skywalker lived in. Sidi something. You know, his uncle's house before he was killed.

I was on an Earthwatch dig there for 2 weeks so didn't stay in a hotel, but was located in the suburb of Carthage. Beautiful place. There was a hotel there on the beach that didn't allow non-guests unless they paid and that was really a good thing (we used to go over there, rent an umbrella and sit on the shore). There was another hotel where we ate which was up high, overlooking the city. I understood it was less expensive but a great place to stay(one woman I met stayed there) and it had a swimming pool. My main point is Carthage is a terrific location. There is a little commuter train you can get on and go one direction and end up in Tunis to do sightseeing and visit the bazaar and go the other direction and visit a lot of fascinating little coastal towns, like Sidi Bou Said, which has a shopping section built on hills, whitewashed buildings, and a place to drink mint tea outdoors looking over the ocean. There are interesting ruins to see and a museum. My girlfriend who lives in Germany said that Carthage is an "in-place" for Germans to visit. BTW, I've traveled in several North African and Middle Eastern countries, and for my tastes Tunisia has the best food of any. You can get great fresh fish on the coast, too. I hope this helps a bit.
