Country hotel near Newcastle

Can anyone recommend a nice country hotel near Newcastle or a website (have tried Johansens but no joy)? I'm really not familiar with the area so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Jesmond Dene House is fab - not sure if it is 'country' enough, but I recommend it.

This might be too far, but Seaham Hall is superb.

Jesmond Dene Hotel is not a country hotel - it's in the middle of Tyneside & Seaham Hall, whilst it's great, ain't exactly country either

Try Slaley Hall or Linden Hall

Some people are so rude!
Yes, Seaham is lovely, but you need to sit down when looking at the tariffs!
Jesmond Dene has had a huge refit and is now really lovely. I like the way it is so close to the centre and yet it feels like you are in the country. The food is fabulous!

Morgana - I think we're going to go for Jesmond Dene! The photos are gorgeous and I love that old/new thing. I don't mind that it's not "deep" country, it looks too lovely to pass up.

Thank you again - I would never have found this hotel without you!

Great! I promise you it is every bit as good as the website indicates! It hasn't been open that long since it's huge make over. I have a feeling it might have been a girl's school before.
Despite its proximity to Newcastle centre it feels like you are in a park.
If you do go, please let me know how you got on!

I was at Jesmond Dene Hotel recently and the food and ambience is superb.

But.......

I would echo other correspondents who say the it is not in the country. Northumberland is such a wonderful and beautiful place it really would be a shame to miss the chance to see it properly, and there are so many amazing and historic places on your doorstep: Alnwick Castle with its art collection, and Alnwick Garden (try the Treehouse Restaurant), Warkworth Castle, the lovely sandy beaches at Embleton and Budle Bay,the dramatic Bamburgh Castle, and the jewel that is Holy Island (Lindisfarne). Linden Hall would be a better location for these, with Slaley and Matfen Hall altenatives. Then there is the Border country: so much to see.

Just stayed at Linden Hall for a wedding and reception elsewhere. Well looked after and Nicola the Reservations Manager is a star. Thanks for everything.

Llewellyn

We stayed else where in Northumbria 2 years ago. We pulled up Linden Hall as we were curious - it had been ehavy snow and the place looked absolutely beautiful - as did reception and the facilities - we are thinking of going soon.

One thing that always concerns us with any hotel is the gravey train of weddings that some operate particularly during summer weekends - we have numerous stays at very expensive hotels all over the world tainted by drunken weddings. what was your impression - would we disappointed?
