craters - Empakaai or Olmoti
Which would you choose for a hike? could both be done in an afternoon? I'm assuming we could not do it by ourselves and would need a guide?
Thanks!

There was an active thread on this several months ago, search for 'olmoti' and you can probably find it ... the consensus was Olmoti is closer to the lodges and crater and doable as a day trip but Empakaai was further away and more of an expledition. Based on that thread we are planning an afternoon trek to Olmoti while at Ngorongoro Sopa.
I doubt you can do both in an afternoon and you will need a guide, partly to spread some shillings to the local economy and partly to watch out for Cape buffalo.

Melissa, the best way to find the thread I mentioned is to type 'thnigs' in the search box, since the person who originated the thread had a spelling problem There are 22 replies and I think you'll find your answers (or at least some good info) in the thread.

Bill,
Thanks for orienting me. I found it: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=4
I also just talked to Jo Bertone from naipendasafaris (who is handling my last minute departure FABULOUSLY BTW). She just returned from Tanzania yesterday.
I asked her about walking the crater and it sounds as if the rain has just done horrid damage to everything (along the line of the oliver's camp thread), about 20 people had to sleep on the floor of sopa because they had nowhere to go, they're in the process of rebuilding the roads, etc.
The entire point being, if you're traveling soon, the rain might be a big factor in our ability to take certain hikes, visit certain places. Jo did not think (this week at least) that it would be possible.
Well, back to reading everyones fabulous comments!
Thanks,
Melissa

Wow, they got hammered if people are sleeping on the floor at the Sopa.
Our first night there is Jan 26 (it's the last place we visit) so here's hoping for a relatively dry two weeks. I can handle it if all we miss is the hike to Olmoti, so long as we are able to get to the crater floor each AM and don't have to sleep on the Sopa floor
