Amman hotels

We are planning a few days in Petra; Wadi Rum; ; Mt. Nebo, Madaba and Jerash on a private tour, in the fall.

Where to stay for one overnight only, in Amman? I'm concerned about safety and feeling as comfortable as possible, knowing there have been some hotel bombings there within the past year or so. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I can tell you where NOT to stay - I was in Amman last summer and stayed at the Palm Palace - definitely avoid this place. Although I found the people of Jordan overwhelming friendly and welcoming, the staff at the hotel was extremely rude and unhelpful and the rooms were less than desirable for what I was paying.

There's a lovely modern residential area in the northern part of Amman. Believe the neighborhood is called Sheshmani (Sp) or something like that. They have some lovely hotel here, some even with names with which we're familiar... shopping malls, coffee shops, Internet cafes, discos, restaurants... you name it.

Wish I could remember names for you, but we were most impressed with what we saw, even stopping into a few for a "look-see." The bathrooms were spotless!

Most of the American hotel chains like Marriott/Crown Plaza/Holiday Inn/Sheraton have chains in Amman. The Crown Plaza in Amman is very good but so is the Holiday Inn and the Sheraton. It all depends on your budget. Don't be afraid.. those are isolated incidents. The people are very friendly but taxi drivers can spot a tourist and may want to talk you into going to their "hotel" instead. Don't listen to them.
