We may be next.

After having just weathered Hurricane Charley here in SW Florida, we are happy to be off on Aug. 22nd (8 more days). Our safari stops: Moremi Game Reserve and Savute Elephant Camp (Botswana) and Inyati (SSGR in S.A.). PLUS: an elephant back safari and golf at the Elephant Hills Golf Club in Vic Falls; Soweto and The Cradle of Humankind in Jo'burg; Robbens Island in Cape Town; La Petite Ferme in Franschoek; whale watching in Hermanus; and cage diving with great white sharks in Gansbaai.

jrruff-
Wow...Charley was a terrible storm! I watched CNN today and saw the extensive damage in Florida. Glad you're doing OK.

On a happier note, have a great time in Africa. Looks like a fun itinerary. Cage diving w/ the great whites, whale watching, elephant back riding, safari etc. all on the same trip. Doesn't get much beter than that!

Don't forget to post a trip report when you come home. Looking forward to reading it. Safe travels.

It seems we've got a lot of folks preparing for upcoming trips to the great continent so I thought I'd resurrect this thread.

I leave in 12 days (Feb. 9th) for Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. Yippee!

Who's next?

ttt since I am dying for some trip reports...seems to be a little dry for new trip reports lately.

Okay, "Africa", "Cooncat" and "STamiya" are all going in the next couple weeks and all going to Chiawa Camp, amongst other places (Sausage Tree, Luangwa River Lodge, Puku Ridge, and elsehwere). But, I am not meaning to steal the thunder from any three of you, so by all means tell the world about your great upcoming safaris.

Who else is leaving soon and where are you going? I am dying for some good Southern Africa trip reports and photos!

I am about 29 weeks away from my next visit and that will feel like an eternity so I do hope there are many good trip reports and photos in the meantime.

I can never resist these threads - they really help with travel fever. We leave just after you, Rocco, in 32 days, June 9 - I have already posted on the countdown thread but here it is again:
Little Kulala, Namibia
Palmwag Rhino Camp
Ongava Tented Camp
Savuti Camp, Botswana
Stanley's Camp
Kwetsani Camp

I'm looking forward to trying out the new photography skills that I picked up in Phil Douglis' workshop last Feb. - I hear the Namibian desert offers fantastic photo opps. I'm making my first return visit, to Savuti Camp. I also wanted to try out a non-Wilderness camp which is why Stanley's. Didn't get to the delta last year so I'm looking forward to that stunning beauty once more. I'll be very interested in your trip report Rocco - I know how much you love SLNP, but I found the Lower Zambezi to be more beautiful and exotic. Wonder if you'll agree.

The days aren't going fast enough! Just 17 days to go, although it will take us 2 travelling days to get there! Our itinerary is 5 nights Kwara Island (if open, if not 5 nights Kwara camp), 5 nights Duba Plains, and 6 nights Zibilianja. It's been 2 years since our last trip, so I am really craving my Africa fix. I will be very happy to post pics and report when I return (June 12th).

OK... I will try to help here but Crickey.... I have today just realized that I cannot for the life of me find my BRAND NEW Lowepro photo gloves and my 2nd quick-release plate for my ballhead so at the moment I am not the entertaining Fodorite I so strive to be. Anyone have any idea what I could have done with this stuff? THIS IS NOT PART OF THE DREAM I HAD AWHILE BACK IN CASE ANY OF YOU ARE STILL HERE ..it is, sadly, for real...) I didn't think so. Back to Calumet and B&H and if my stuff shows up I'll have to return some things.

For anyone in planning stages here is my itinerary so please feel free to ask questions AFTER my return!

7 nights Chiawa/ Old Mondoro (May 27-June2)
3 nighs Chamilandu (Africa Bushcamp Company)
3 nights Luangwa River Lodge
3 nights Tafika Camp
1 night Taj Pamodzi, Lusaka.
All for now - time to hit the pillow.

Just hearing about all these great trips is enough of a little fix for me.

Lin, unfortunately, my original post to start this thread is over two years old. I would love to be leaving for Zambia in a few days but it will have to wait, probably all the way until September/October 2007. Meanwhile, I am glad to be making my first visit to Botswana and Namibia (Caprivi Strip) in Nov/Dec 2006, as well as visiting Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge. The plan is to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, and then hop on a South Africa bound plane the same night.

I have decided to do things a bit differently this time and I will try to somehow get over my jetlag with 3 nights in the Sabi Sand, a luxury I usually save for last. Instead, I am hoping to end with a very heavy dose of Botswana running through my veins. Here is my itinerary:

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge (3)
The Grace, Joburg (1)
Chobe Chilwero (Sanctuary)(2)
Ntwala Island Lodge (Islands In Africa)(2)
Susuwe Island Lodge (I.I.A.)(2)
Lagoon (Kwando)(2)
Lebala (Kwando)(2)
Kwara (Kwando)(3)
Chiefs Camp (Sanctuary)(2)
Baines Camp (Sanctuary)(2)
Michelangelo Towers, Sandton, Joburg (1)(this will make for an easier flight home, I hope)

I would leave Thanksgiving night and return exactly one week before Christmas. It will be HOT, but I will be mostly in luxury lodges/camps, many with private plunge pools to help cool off in.

Then the plan is to return to Southern Africa in May 2007 for the Indaba convention in Durban, followed by about 17 nights in Zim.

For that trip:

Durban (2) (I don't know the name of the hotel, but Julian, my partner in the unmentionable venture has already booked a couple hotel rooms somewhere)
The Hide, Hwange (2)
Somalisa Camp, Hwange (2)
Musango Safari Camp, Matusadona (3)
Camp Amalinda, Matobo Hills (3)
Pamushana, Malilangwe Private Game Reserve (3)
Vundu Camp, Mana Pools (4)
Michelangelo Towers, Joburg (2)

I am really looking forward to the reports we will see next month from those returning from Zambia!
