Cronen - well, I guess at this point you're just marking the days till you get on the plane and are on your way. It'll be here before you know, and just as soon, sadly, you'll be back home. The time goes oh so quickly. But you'll all have a wonderful time.

Since my first trip to Africa in '96, people still look as me strangely when I mention I'm heading back to Africa. Though I must say, that whether it was my partner who traveled with me or girlfriend/s (when parnter not available) - all bubble-over with the excitement of the most unbelievable destinations they've ever experienced.

There are just some people who can't think "outside the box" as mentioned above, are jealous, aren't adventurous, can't imagine anything but Paris or a cruise. But that's fine with me. Though I've traveled to Australia, So.East Asia, Europe, Western Canada, more than half the US states, Middle East, Caribbean. So to those who think as such, I say: "you can have Paris" - "I'll take the rest of the world, and that world begins (ends) in Africa."

Don't forget to touch base here before you depart - and we'll await your trip report on your return.

Cronen: May the spirit of Africa touch your soul, as it obviously has ours. Appreciate all you see, hear, and, yes, even smell. Look at that huge African sky at night, and revel in its wonder. I am still checking off my days until we leave, but in the meantime, I am thoroughly enjoying other peoples plans and trips. Enjoy the wonder of Africa.

Thanks to all who responded to my post. Still counting the days. I also enjoy reading posts about trips and information. I can't get enough so now I'm renting "Out of Africa" to further get me into the mind set ! Any other movie suggestions or books to get one primed? It's funny, I know after I read "The Da Vinci Code" I was ready to pack for Paris and Rome. Now I read they have really set up "Da Vinci Code' tours. Maybe someone will come up with a wild book on the cradle of mankind that takes off!

As far as movies: "Nowhere in Afrika," German with English subtitles with a stunning soundtrack, and "I Dreamed of Africa."

20 days to go!! I can't wait for June to go by - my first trip to East Africa!(I've been in Egypt earlier)

Roccco - I saw your post here on Tanzania Serengeti Adventures, and contacted them. They gave me a list of references, which I checked - and I heard nothing but good things about TSA. Their rates were very competitive too - so I'm going with them in Tanzania. Thanks.

My itinerary is a classic East African one

2nd July - Arrive Nairobi
3rd - 5th Masai Mara (tented camp)
6th Lake Nakuru
7-8th Amboseli (lodge)
9th - Arusha
10th-11th Tarangire (Sopa Lodge)
12th Ngorongoro (Sopa lodge)
13th - 16th Serengeti (Sopa Lodge)
16th - fly back to Arusha, then on to Nairobi and out.

Managed to get this done after a lot of juggling with dates, places and lodges / camps - which was fun to do.

Only part I'm not fully satisfied with is the 1 night at Ngorongoro - ideally would have wanted to spend nights, with 1 full day in the crater - coudn't manage the dates around that. I read a post here which recommended you get into the crater early - I won't be able to that, since we will be driving from Tarangire.

Counting down the days!!

Let's keep the countdown going? Who's next in line to visit the great continent?

Jan, since I just read on another thread you've only got three days left till you leave, I think it may be you. Have a wonderful trip and tell the eles hello for me!

Yes, Jan is off to her beloved Kenya very, very soon. And rumor has it despite all the dire predictions of traffic in Boston due to the DNC this week, she will be able to get to Logan without a problem. Jan, you know what I am thinking, so I will say no more. Touch base upon your return. And give my love to those fantastic eles!

We leave for Kenya and Tanzania on August 31 and I can't wait! It will be our first trip to Africa, and also our honeymoon. Everyone on this board has been extremely helpful and friendly and I'm so grateful to you all. I plan on keeping a diary while I'm away so I can post a trip report when I return!

Divewop and Susan:

Thanks for the well wishes. As long as I can get to the airport through all the DNC convention road blocks and the plane leaves on schedule is all I ask for. I know everything in Kenya will be super.

Susan, will let you know about Elephant Watch Camp when I get back.

Jan-
Good luck and enjoy every minute. You have been so fortunate to go so many times and I wish you as many more in the future. We'll be waiting for the trip report.

Style Oracle-I've missed out on your planning, but I will be waiting for the trip report. The first safari is always the best trip report I think. My best wishes to you and may you have many more trips there. I've just completed my eighth, I think. After awhile I forget which number it is, but it still beckons.......ahhhhhhh! You'll love it. Good idea (to resurrect this thread).
I already said Bon Voyage to Jan, but will say it again.

AND the same to anyone else who's about to set off!

BTW... Jan I just came through Logan last night and things pretty smooth. I work across the street from convention and traffic as light as I ever have seen it in my life!

... Savuti, Duba Plains, Mombo ... not long now. I'm reading all the reports, and this promises to be even more interesting than my past trips. After this one, I shall hang it up Africa for a while, and see some other parts of this interesting world. Have a good day all.

When you go to Mombo, unless she's on leave, the manager at Little Mombo will be Elmari (she often introduces herself as Ella). Please say hello if you have time and remind her to drop me an email. She was the best manager we had at any camp this trip. And close second was David, who was at Jack's Camp when we were there but about to transfer to join Elmari at Little Mombo. So it's going to be a WINNING team.

... will do, Kavey ... asked for #9 again, which will put me close. Travelling this time with friends from UK, whom we met at Phinda in '01. Real birders and old hands at safari - this will be their 10th. Take care.

Thanks to you all. Seems like "homecoming" here with Kavey, Liz, Susan and all back online. Wonderful.

GreenDrake - thanks for the encouragement. Our airport limo drivers here in the suburbs didn't even want to book to go to Logan this week. I can either take the Logan Express or if necessary I'll walk the lenth of Rte 93 pulling my duffle behind me!!!!
