Thanks to everyone for the helpful posts. I'd love to have my own room but on this trip the single supplement is around $1000 so I guess I'd rather be sleep-deprived.

I'll be trying out battery-operated noise machines & different earplugs in the meantime.

Casual Cairo: I have prescription Lunesta I'll be bringing but thanks for the pill advice!

I was once on a trip with my mother and aunt, both in-denial snorers. They agreed to wear the Breathe Right strips and they worked! Unfortunately, after a few nights, the sides of their noses got a little dry and irritated and they both rebelled. No more Breathe Right and back to the snoring.

If you can get your mom to wear these, they do help considerably. I'd at least bring a pack in your luggage as a back-up.

Have a great trip.

Leely -- thanks for that advice. I mentioned it to my mom and she said no problem. Now, if they irritate her nose, like you mentioned, I'm sure she'll rebel too. Then back to the cattle prod to shock her into silence

What about having your Mom try the Breathe Rite strips every other night to prevent irritation? If they seem to work she could then try using them every night.
My sister swears by the foam type ear plugs.

my husband is the loudest snorer there is. i've never heard of the white noise machine, but i think he'd drown out the white noise.
breath rites didn't work for him, nor any of other over the counter attempts to curb the snoring.
i wear the Mack's silcone ear plugs, much better than foam. the only draw back was missing out on the night noises, lions etc on our safari.
i've used the breath rites for myself for sinus and if your mom has an skin irration she can take a little piece of cotton and put it under the strip across the bridge of her nose, that should help.

joeyi --
When you wear those silicone earplugs do they sit far enough in your ear that you can lay on your side without it hurting?
I know they're cheap so I just need to get some and practice.

they are really pliable and you shape them to fit your ear and then you can flatten down what is left. no problem with laying on your side.
Look for the Mack's brand, they are the best, and there are a few sets in the box. not sure where you live, i'm in San Diego, my Vons supermarket has them in the "drugstore" aisle.

Snoring must be treated as soon as possible." I can personally recommend a very good product which helps us relieve from snoring. The product is asonor. Asonor nose drops effectively remove the cause of snoring. It is a plain and simple treatment, which relives you of the inconvenience that snoring causes.
The cost of Asonor 2 Bottles (2*30 ml.) is 1-€39.00 only

Since this post got brought back to the top I thought I'd chime in -- on the Egypt trip halfway through we started paying extra for separate rooms each night. Until then I had to sleep on the floor of the bathroom in every hotel.
I was so sleep deprived the first few nights - I believe it is partially to blame for the travelers sickness I ended up getting a few nights into the trip (altho' it could've been strictly food/water-borne bacteria, who knows).

Anyway, on a trip 2 weeks from now mom & I have bitten the bullet on the cost and we'll each be in our own rooms. Hopefully the walls are thick enough that I won't hear her through them! I also got a white noise machine that is made for European current so that will help drown out other noises.

As far as her getting treated for sleep apnea -- she refuses to believe she even snores. Totally denies it and thinks I'm somehow hallucinating!

Snoring happen because of breathing disorder cause by a subtle tissue, membrane, or fluid blocking the perspiration causes an obstruction of air and produces noise. Due to the various reasons of snoring, there is not one cure for all symptoms. However, different tips to stop snoring are available that can be helpful to reduce or stop snoring altogether. The best way to reduce snoring is to invest in asonor product. Asonor was the only nasal spray of the 7 products tested and it turns out that the three mouth spray delivered products scored the three lowest scores.

The cost of Asonor 2 Bottles (2*30 ml.) is 1-€39.00 only

I am so glad this old question popped up. I sleep in my own room since I can't sleep with hubbys snoring-so when we travel & are in same room YIKES.
Thanks Debbie-I wrote down the name of that sleeping aide. My Dr's here give me ambien but a trip takes them all up. I;ll try to get that Zolam.
I guess if there's a problem at a pharmacy I'll have my guide help me??
We will be at the Marriott on Sept 29& 30th Then again on October 16th Oct 21st & October 24th. Is there a pharmacy by there? Thanks Chris
PS I also travel with my sound machine

Do NOT ask your guide to help you get the Zolam. I can guarantee the Pharmacies will deny your guide Zolam. It is controlled, but I find I have MUCH better luck getting it by myself because I'm a foreigner. I suggest NOT going to the larger Pharmacies like El Ezaby or Seif. They will not sell it to you. Go to the little neighborhood Pharmacies. Walk in by yourself and ask for it. About 75% of the time the Pharmacist will just sell it to you and not ask any quesitions - as long as you are a foreigner. They sell it in 2.5 and 5.0 mg doses - take either one they have. You can take 1/2 a pill or 2 pills if you want a higher or lower dose.
Egyptians will not get the same treatment at all....even if he says he's buying it for a foreigner.

There is one (or more) Pharmacies out on 26 July Street. Try them, but if you find a small pharmacy on a side street, that would be better.

BeniciaChris - This is a bit outside of what you've said but I just wanted to mention: I used to use ambien and had some issues with it but have had much better results with lunesta. I get the 2 or 3 mg dose and cut them in half - so I can make a prescription last a very long time (1 or 1.5 is enough for me). Anyway, just saying that in case you don't love the ambien. Only downside I find is a slight metallic taste with lunesta but it's not a big deal. FWIW!

I use my IPod to block out unwanted noise. I've loaded it with some of the gentle rain, waves crashing on the beach, etc. sound albums and they work like a charm. I don't have any trouble sleeping with the little ear buds on and the charge will last for an entire night. Its blocked out screaming babies for me -- should work for snoring.

Adding to this thread regarding getting separate rooms:
just got back from a trip with my mom where we paid extra for our own rooms and don't you know in one hotel our beds were head to head, separated only by a thin piece of drywall. Of course I could hear her snoring through the wall!

I had to turn and sleep with my head at the foot of the bed & crank up the white-noise machine to jet engine levels. Oh well....
