Where should I buy safari clothes?

Unless you feel a deep burning need for a pith helmet, swagger stick, or some such, don't worry 
-- you don't really need any special clothes, just comfortable clothes in neutral colours. All of my 'safari clothes' are things that I wear here in England -- they just happen to be khaki, green, tan, and brown.

,safari clothes are the items you buy for sfari before dicovering all the info at fodor's, and by that time the return policy has expired. BTW, want to buy some safari shirts, complete with epaulets?

I never bought any safari clothes per se, but as a city dweller who's pretty much in a black-and-heels uniform, I found I did have to augment my wardrobe. Just went to Gap (and even Old Navy!) and picked out some neutral-colored cotton stuff.
Like me and others on this board, you may end up dropping a little weight on safari. So my advice is: don't buy anything that's a bit too big to begin with. That "dressy scarf for safari dinners" I was always reading about? It ended up as my belt, tied tight to hold my pants up--not a good look.

What camps did you stay at? I think I'd like to add them to my itinerary...
I tend to gain weight on safari, especially when I stay at CCA camps as they have particularly good food, so I tend to avoid packing anything that DOESN'T fit a bit loosely.

You're asking all the wrong questions, I'm afraid. Inquire not "Is the dining delightful?" but rather "Is the food mildly edible?"

AH HA! So, rather than planning around the full moon, tidal phases or whatnot, what I should be doing is asking each of the lodges when their supplies are restocked. Then, I can plan to be there for the 2 - 3 days just prior to the re-stocking!
That or the khanga might just have to be fashioned into a muumuu.

Hi Leely,
I suppose that is one plus of going to places where the food is bad...though after enduring English food for most of the year, maybe overeating on safari is some sort of survival mechanism!

Well, Rocco did mention that he got chewed up by tsetse flies (whose affinity for blue explains why you're usually advised to avoid that colour).
The Maasai wear bright colours because they want to be noticed (by animals and by other people) -- if you are on foot around big game, being noticed by the animals means less likelihood of an unplanned confrontation. However, the goal on safari is to observe animals acting as naturally as possible, so you don't want them to notice you -- hence the advice to blend in. Different colours for different purposes.

Trust me, while in the Puku Ridge area, it wouldn't have mattered if I had a forcefield around me, the Tetse flies would have still got in. I just wanted to wear comfortable clothes and avoid any loud colors. The tetses did not bother one bit in Lower Zambezi (the photos in which I was wearing a light blue t-shirt), but they made my life miserable in the Puku Ridge area...even so, for the incredible lion interactions I had at Puku Ridge, I would gladly suffer through Tetse flies to get in this prime area for lions (and leopards).

If this is correct indulge your hedonistic propensities and purchase your undergarments ( I had difficulty finding a discreet word ) from Victoria's Secret - something nice and spicy! Unfortunately Game Rangers are too busy pointing fingers at the exotic rather than the erotic. As for the rest of your attire nobody here in Africa gives a damn so pick up the drabbest items you can find at your local military surplus store. If you are German please do not forget the obligatory white socks with your sandals. This is necessary for us to determine your language group.
