When a leopard in a cage becomes two lions

This is the blog for an AWF leopard researcher. To read properly you need to start on the 09 November entry for leopard trapping and then work your way up.

Hari: was that part interesting or did it come off as a sensationalized freak show? It's starting to sound like the show is anything but a game drive.

Bill: It wasn't nice at all - two lions trapped in one (which fits only one). Tranquilized and sedated etc etc., one of the other traps also got a Tawny Eagle.

The episode I watched had a segment of highlights from the prior shows and this was part of it.

The show also had clips and segments from the Joubert films to show the life of how cats live.

Thanks for the info Hari. It's hard to control all the variables in field studies so sometimes unexpected things like this happen but it did read like something that sounded a little over traumatic for television.

And I thought I had problems the time I caught a weasel in a Sherman trap. Wow!

Gritty: I know that problem well. The weasel I had that was only part way in the Sherman trap with most of its torso and head out was tougher than the one all the way in. Also have had a rattle snake in the Sherman but once over the surprise that was much easier than the weasel. Of course once you get a weasel the trap is so malodorous you can't use it for the rest of the season.

My god this is insanity....the things people do in the name of "research"..what idiots...the stress and potential danger to these animals does not justify every organization thinking they haev the right to do half assed research projects and endanger these animals....i see more animals in Africa with collars that are too small, because some "researcher", came in, mucked about for a year, lost the grant money or just got tired and left...without bothering to remove the collars...they need to have some regulations or controls on these so called research projects--which are often cause much more harm than they had intended...

They were supposedly trying to establish the extent of territories of the Leopards in the Kruger and to see if this particular animal goes to Mozamibque ......
