Weather and packing for Oct

My husband and I are going on a OAT tour of the Serengeti for 13 days with an added trip to the Masai Mara for 5 days on Oct. 10. What is the weather at that time and what kind of clothing do we need. I do have the suggested OAT packing list but it seems very minimal to say the least.

I was in Serengeti & Crater last October and wore a simple light shirt and lightweight pants. Nice comfortable weather. Dry heat, dusty.

waynehazleDOTcom/eastafrica the picture of my family there is at Serengeti Sopa. I think my wife was a little warm with long sleeves. Logn sleeves was OK at night but even then not needed.

2 days later we went down into the Crater at 6AM and that was windy and cold.

Jogehanna, just curious, is it the 'safari serengeti' tour you are going on? I'm going on the OAT 'best of kenya and tanzania', leaving the same day. I was wondering about the weather, too.

The list is minimal, as you can have laundry done at the various lodges/camps while on safari. Price is inexpensive. As others can attest, you rewear your khaki or tan slacks, t-shirts and sweaters repeatedly; everyone is in a similar situation - "a sea of tan."

But you will find the day-time temps to be mild, in the high-60s/low 70s; evenings and mornings will be chilly at about 50-55-degrees, though downright cold (freezing sometimes) on the rim of the Crater (though mild on the Crater floor).

Of course, weather can be quirky, so be prepared for a possible shower, windy/blowy day. A windbreaker is a good piece of outter-wear.

So, layering is suggested that, can be removed by mid- to late-morning, until later in the afternoon.

Do a search on this board for "safari clothing" or "clothing for safari" (without the "" around the search words) in the box on top of this page, click the search button on right; the threads will appear in the left column.

Wayne and Sandi, Thanks for the information. Wayne - I really enjoyed reading parts of journal and found myself laughing out loud because I can picture myself in the same situation with the dust and bumpiness of the roads.

Ann - We are going on the best of the Serengeti and just received our tour information. Enjoy your trip.
