Typhoid vaccination for Tanzania safari?..

Going over Christmas to upscale safari camps and Zanzibar resort. I do not eat street food and an reasonably careful about restaurant food. Itvwas suggested to me to get typhoid vaccination for this trip. What do you think?

Typhoid is the absolute bare minimum for travel to Africa. For other recommended vaccinations you should consult a qualified doctor & see http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/desti...-tanzania.aspx for guidance.

Don't assume that because you are staying at upscale palces their actual hygeine standards will be up to western standards.

mdtravelhealth.com Tanzania CDC.gov Tanzania for info.

Typhoid jab expensive not 100% effective side effects rarely not usually indicated for upscale Safari for me food and water
precautions are essential for me.I just bring ntibiotics and start them promptly with any symptoms works fine.

"Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it"

If you drink water, buy it bottled(exmine seal carefully)e . Bottled carbonated water is safer than uncarbonated water.

Ask for drinks without ice unless the ice is made from bottled or boiled water. Avoid popsicles and flavored ices that may have been made with contaminated water.

Eat foods that have been thoroughly cooked and that are still hot and steaming.Avoid raw vegetables and fruits that cannot be peeled. Vegetables like lettuce are easily contaminated and are very hard to wash well.•When you eat raw fruit or vegetables that can be peeled, peel them yourself. (Wash your hands with soap first.) Do not eat the peelings.

Avoid foods and beverages from street vendors.

Follow this plan odds are great you will be fine.

if however I were backpacking eating street food working in
camps as I have done in the past I do take it.It certainly
will not hurt.Typhoid is Salmonella infection one of many forms of TD(traveler's diarrhea) #1 cause of traveler disability but easily treatable with antibiotics.

The big risk would be to take the jab and think you can eat
and drink anything a sure recipe for the Tanzania Two Step
Trot to the Loo...

So either way controversial but not for upscale for me.

Never in 17/years had a Thyphoid jab or tabs. In fact, believe one year doc wrote script for tabs which I never filled/taken.

Never in 17/years any issues with food.
- never eat street food anywhere (even at home)
- in Africa - Ken, Tnz, Sa, Zim, Zam, Bots - have eaten everything including salads.

We too took the oral typhoid this time around...last time the injection. Guess the question really is...why not get vaccinated? Do you plan to continue traveling anywhere?? Africa is not the only continent where typhoid is reco.

Neuman, that's why we did it - just didn't see a good reason not to. Same for the malaria pills we took when we visited Cambodia.
