Let me try to clear up the misunderstanding (from 2006):
If a tour company or ground operator claims to pay the highest salaries (many do), they should back it up by telling you the salary of your guide! If not, then they must remove their salary claims. That's my opinion (I know very well this is mostly a useless exercise, but if you get a nice low safari quote from a company who 'pays the highest salaries' something's not right.)
And paying double the fair market value for a safari to an overseas tour company does not mean your guide share in the big profits!
I deal with this all the time. Large overseas companies ask me for safari quotes. They want really low NETT rates, yet non-one has ever asked me how much their guides will get paid! They are not concerned about that despite GREEN & RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL claims on their web sites!
This is why I said - take good care of your guide regardless of how much you paid for your safari.
