Supplies in Cape Town

I realize this may be a really "silly" question - but can anyone tell me if there are any "Walmart" type stores in Cape Town. We are going on a 2 month overland safari - and are having a hard time keeping our weight down - due to lotion, shampoo, conditioner, bug spray etc... for that length of time.

We have 6 days in Cape Town before our Overlander starts. It would be much simpler if there was a discount department store where we could just buy what we need before we head out.

Also if there is something like that can anyone recommend a bug spray to purchase once there. We use the Deep Woods Off here - but is there something better to buy locally.

Thanks in advance.

If you are flying to Capetown on a commercial jet, I don't understand why you have a weight issue.

Cape Town is a modern 1st World City, there are scores of such stores. The most likely choice will obviously be one that is close to wherever you are staying. So unless you say where that is and you want reassurance that there one in the immediate vicinity, simply ask someone when you get there.

As for bug spray, there is a choice of DEET-based sprays and lotions. These will be stocked by even the smaller supermarkets.

Thanks for the replies - I was able to find some info on line after I posted - and now realize just how "silly" the question was.

We are staying at the Brenwin House near Table Mountain area (I believe) for our first few nights. It was recommended by the company we are using for the Shark Dive. Then to Backpacker Hostel for our pre-overlander stay, meetings etc...... I'm positive there will be able to find something nearby.

As for the weight issue - the flight from JNB to Cape Town is our only problem with 33 lb limit. We have to bring sleeping bags, therma rest, pillows, etc.... for our overlander which doesn't sound like a lot - but 1lb here, 2 lbs there.....apparently is a lot!!.

Thanks again -

It has just occurred to me that my comment about bug sprays was based on Jo'burg experience. I realise now that I can't say for certain whether it is as common in Cape Town, because there might be less demand being much further from the NE malaria-endemic part of the country. I haven't ever needed to buy that item in CT.

For shampoo, lotion, etc. look for OK stores or any of the supermarket chains such as Checkers or Pick N Pay or Spar.

Have a wonderful time!

Just got back from Cape Town and Checkers and Pik N Pack were my favorite stores. You can buy anything you could get in the US at a big grocery store. You will also find most prices very affordable.

Pipflam,

Seeing that you are staying at Brenwin House all you need have to do is the following:

1. Walk 100 yards down the road to the Green Point Main Road and there you will find a Hypermed Pharmacy which is well known for its discounted prices. You should obtain most toiletries at this pharmacy as it is very cheap. In terms of insect repellant, even though I highly doubt if you will need this anywhere in the Cape Town, Western Cape or Eastern Cape area, I would suggest that you purchase spray on Tabard. http://www.acorngroup.co.za/tabard.html To my knowledge (I could be wrong) Tabard spray is not available in the USA and could well be worth taking home as it is an excellent insect repellant.

2. When you arrive at the Main Road turn left towards Sea Point and walk for about 600 yards. On the corner of Glengariff Road and Main Road you will find a Clicks store. Once again you should be able to purchase all you need at this store.

3. Finally if the above two suggestions have not had you find all that you will need simply walk in the direction of Sea Point for another 400 yards from Clicks and arrive at the Adelphi Centre where you will find a Pick and Pay.

After covering the above three spots you should certainly be able to find all that you need.

Hope that you have a wonderful stay in our great city.

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa

Ah, Selwyn, I had forgotten about Clicks.

You're right; Tabard isn't available in the US. We've brought it home from SA a couple of times and finished it off here.
