Post-WTM Southern Africa Camp Updates

Hello,

The London World Travel Market took place last week, and there were some exciting camp updates, organized by country:

BOTSWANA
I saw some artist's concept drawings for the new tents at Zib. They will be marquee style (suspended from a central pole, like the new LV) rather than Meru-style), and will be premier-level in size and layout, with separate bedrooms, sitting areas, loos, outdoor showers, and salas (similar to Mombo). Decor will be 'campaign style' with lovely dark wood campaign furniture (similar in feel to Jack's Camp) and copper accents, including some amazing copper bathtubs. There will be one plunge pool for the camp (not private plunge pools).

Plans to enlarge / move the pool at Selinda have been put on hold.

All new vehicles (Land Cruisers) have been purchased for Selinda and Zib. There will now be one special private vehicle for each camp, a luxury SUV which has had the roof removed and been modified to the Jouberts’ specifications for use in wildlife photography.

Soft refurbs will take place at Chitabe and Mombo over the coming low season. More extensive refurbs are in the pipeline for Chitabe but the timetable is uncertain.

Jack’s Camp will be undergoing a substantial upgrade in early 2008, with completion planned for April 2008. The tents will be re-designed to improve airflow, with higher walls and less of a steep pitch to the roofs, and ceiling fans will be installed. A much larger pool will be added, shaded by a pavilion similar in style to the current San Camp mess tent (but with the Jack’s Camp rose print inside). (For those who have visited Jack’s, it will be located amongst the palm trees between the mess tent and Tent 1). The guest loo next to the mess tent will be converted to a tented room rather than an open room (much to the relief of anyone who has had to use it during the wet season). The current plunge pool outside the tea tent may be converted into part of a honeymoon suite, along with neighbouring Tent 10 – if so, the tea tent will be relocated closer to the new pool. A small shop will be added to Jack’s featuring crafts produced by the local bushmen.

San Camp will be undergoing an even more extensive upgrade at the same time as Jack’s. The mess tent will be replaced by one similar to the one at Jack’s Camp, with a tea room where the museum is at Jack’s. The guest tents will be at least double (if not larger) in size, and will have hot and cold running water rather than bucket showers. The loo area will be designed to be similar to that at Jack’s, with the loo indoors and both indoor and outdoor shower options. Each tent will have a swinging bed (a padded bench strung up like a hammock – there’s a photo of one at Jack’s in the Safari Photo Album) on the veranda to relax and enjoy the views over the pans. Fans will be introduced here as well, and there is talk of a small plunge pool.

Camp Kalahari will also be upgraded using the old San tents, and will develop a more permanent feel.

Planet Baobab has added some additional chalets (not en-suite) to replace the Bushman huts, as well as a new pool. There will also be a children’s play area.

CCA are opening two new super-luxury camps in Botswana in June 2008, Xudum (12 chalets) and Xaranna (12 tents), in a 50,000 hectare concession (either NG29 or NG30 – the person I spoke to wasn’t certain, but FWIW the old Xudum camp is in NG30). The concession will be split 50/50 between the two camps so that each will have its own 25,000 hectare mini-concession and guests will not see vehicles from the other camp. Both have permanent water access and will offer both land and water activities throughout the year. They will have a more modern safari décor (though not so modern as VP) and will have private plunge pools and salas. The chalets at Xudum will have an innovative design incorporating an upstairs pavilion in place of a more traditional sala. The concession is a 20-minute flight from Maun.

Long-awaited upgrades will take place at Kwando Lebala Camp during April 2008. The tents will be enlarged (and hopefully moved further apart as they are very close together now and larger tents would make them even closer).

Desert and Delta have added a new camp on the Boteti River in the Makgadikgadi called Leroo La Tau. It is currently undergoing substantial renovations.

SOUTH AFRICA
Londolozi have completed the refurbishment of Tree Camp and the construction of the new deck for the Private Granite Suites. Both look stunning and can be seen on the Londoz website.

CCA’s refurbishment of Phinda Mountain Lodge is proceeding on schedule, with 16 suites completed at this time. The suites now have private plunge pools and outdoor showers, and the main public area has been redesigned to create a more intimate feel. As the camp (inherited from the previous owners) is substantially larger than most CCA camps, there will be a separate manager for each group of 6-8 suites and the focus will be on creating the feel of a camp-within-a-camp.

The Cape Grace does an annual soft refurb of its rooms but the refurb planned for the coming year is more extensive than usual, incorporating a more modern aesthetic without compromising the Cape Grace’s signature classic elegance. Small groups of rooms will be redone throughout the year, with the majority of the work taking place in the winter (June-August). They are still selecting a designer from their top three contenders but should be releasing some concept drawings shortly. They have also recruited a new chef for the restaurant and will be debuting a new menu shortly, and the restaurant itself will be redecorated doing away with the heavy swags of fabric to take advantage of the views and give it a much lighter, airier feel.

Le Quartier Francais have upgraded the furnishings in their Auberge rooms to the same standard as their suites, with a more modern aesthetic and rich, warm colours.

ZAMBIA
Toka Leya, a new 12-tent WS camp in Victoria Falls, is scheduled to open in May 2008. It’s downstream from River Club and is located on a beautiful site in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. The spray from the falls is visible from the site.

The treehouses at Sussi and Chuma (ex-Star of Africa, now Sanctuary) will undergo some some structural upgrades as well as upgrades to the furnishings. The Chuma Houses are undergoing a soft refurb only.

The David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa, another new addition to the Zambian side of the Falls (like me, some of you may have seen the billboards advertising this lodge in Livingstone over the past year) will be located just upstream of the Royal Livingstone (the two hotels will not be visible from one another). It will be a 72-bed four-star hotel and all rooms will have balconies with river views. The décor will have both colonial and Moroccan influences. It was scheduled to be completed this year but they are now looking at next spring.

Kwena Lagoon Camp, a new 8-tent WS camp in the South Luangwa, is scheduled to open in July 2008.

WS have arranged flights between the parks in Zambia and Mana Pools. Planes will land in Kariba to go through immigration and then proceed to Mana Pools. So no more truck crossing hassle for those who want to experience Mana Pools!

Sanctuary Lodges will be opening Chichele Presidential Lodge in December 2007. The original buildings have been retained but the interiors have undergone a substantial upgrade. The décor will emphasise the feeling of a grand colonial manor, and the rooms will have A/C.

Puku Ridge has been torn down and will be reconstructed with a more natural feel (more wood, less brick). In level of luxury it will be similar to Baines Camp in Botswana. Opening is scheduled for April 2008.

Kulefu in LZNP is scheduled to open in April 2008. It will have 6 chalets rather than tents, all with river views. The central lounge and dining area will be a grand Bedouin-inspired tent. A new airstrip is being constructed for Kulefu Camp, which will make access to the eastern sector of Lower Zambezi National Park much easier. It will be used by Ana Tree Lodge as well as Kulefu.

Lechwe Plains will not reopen until 2009, primarily as a specialist birders’ camp. It will remain a relatively simple tented camp, similar to Stanley’s Camp in Botswana.

ZIMBABWE
The Victoria Falls Hotel has undergone a comprehensive programme of renovations. A new full-service spa will be added in the coming months, with an emphasis on locally inspired treatments.

SAFARI AND ADVENTURE COMPANY
As others have noted WS has launched a spin-off company focusing on a more rustic bush camp experience. However, the camps will NOT be the current Discoverer Explorations camps as some have suggested – they will either be new camps or converted from current vintage-level camps. The first camp to open will be a beach camp in Rocktail Bay, followed by camps elsewhere in South Africa and Namibia as well as within Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Cheers,
Julian

So Jeff Rann will leave NG29, or will it remain a 'multi-purpose' concession?

Some more alternative news:

BOTSWANA

Lodges of Botswana will develop and manage a new lodge in community concession NG33 bordering Moremi Game Reserve in the south-east, east of Chitabe. NG33 is run by the Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust, and it's also the home of Tico McNutt's Wild Dog Research Camp. Lodges of Botswana was selected after an exhaustive process involving the African Development Foundation, the Action for Economic Empowerment Trust, and various local and national government agencies such as the Okavango Development Management Project, Dept. of Wildlife and National Parks, North West District Council, Dept. of Tourism, Tawana Land Board and the District Commissioner's Office. The final decision was made only after consultation with the community at large in open kgotla at which Lodges of Botswana made their presentation and at which community members were able to put their questions and concerns to all of the above, and to voice their hopes for the future of their community. Sankuyo Plains Lodge will be opened towards the later part of 2008.

Deception Valley Lodge has begun work on a 2-bedroom suite – Kalahari Suite. This suite accommodates four guests and comes complete with own private vehicle with guide and tracker and private chef. The Kalahari Suite will operate totally independently from the Lodge. Planned to be open by April 2008.

New Central Kalahari Game Lodge is situated adjacent to Deception Valley Lodge and will accommodate 14 guests in comfortable chalets. Also planned to be open by April 2008.

Nothing important really.

Just curious to see how Zib/Selinda will be doing the next season... especially with the weakening dollar.

Well, Zimbabwe isn't just spray viewing...

There are some new developments under way.

ZIMBABWE

Chikwenya Safari Lodge (adjoining Mana Pools NP) has been completely refurbished and appears to be the first '7-star' safari camp in Zim.

Another luxury option: Pamushana (adjoining Gonarezhou NP) is now managed by Singita and will re-open next season, completely refurbished to Singita standards.

Vundu Tented Camp (Mana Pools NP) will be upgraded to a tree house lodge. A new tented 'old-style' camp is planned further upstream. This is the place in Mana Pools if you want to see wild dogs.

The people at Ruckomechi (Mana Pools) told me that work for a second camp in the concession will start end of this season.

Next season Somalisa/African Bush Camps will offer tented mobile walking safaris in Hwange NP.

And Varden Safaris will offer horse safaris in Hwange NP.

Hello,

A few more updates (found some more WTM stuff in my bag...).

BOTSWANA
Deception Valley Lodge's new luxury suite has been mentioned above.

Central Kalahari Game Lodge will have 14km of the Deception Valley running through their property.

In case anyone is wondering, Sankuyo Plains Lodge (mentioned above) will be located in the same concession as the current Santawani Lodge.

Footsteps in Africa have added Grasslands Bushman Lodge to their portfolio. Grasslands is a small (four simple but comfortable en-suite chalets) family owned and run lodge located about 80km from Ghanzi. Activities have a strong focus on experiences with the San Bushmen, including tracking and game-viewing. Horse riding with San guides is also an option. The owners of Grasslands also run a 'problem predator rescue service' where they will go to a farm which has reported a 'problem predator' and attempt to capture the animal to prevent it from being shot. The animals are held on the farm in temporary enclosures before being relocated, and can be visited by guests.

Footsteps has also recruited a mobile operator with access to both BOGA and HATAB sites.

Cheers,
Julian

Thanks, Julian, for the very detailed information here. Did you mean Kwando Lebala or Lagoon, when referring to the upgrade? I felt the Lagoon tents were very close together, so would be surprised if Lebala got the upgrade.

Whatever, thanks again for the updates.

Momliz,

I think 2008 prices have already been set!!! Maybe more price increases for 2009, what with the weakening dollar and everything ........

Oh, and yes the private vehicle at Zib will come in handy to drive to the next bush dinner bar b q.

Hari -- after reading trip reports like "Back from Lebala,Zib and LKwara" I guess they need all these new features at Zib to keep clients happy...

Nyama,

RE Central Kalahari lodge, does that allow easier access to do lengthy drives into the CKGR? If so, sounds good during the summer months ......

Hari -- it is my understanding that Central Kalahari Lodge is located near Deception Valley Lodge OUTSIDE of the CKGR, and I'm not aware of any new gate into the CKGR in that area. In short: nothing has changed.

Questions to the people in Maun regarding the new CCA camps in NG29:

- has Jeff Rann moved out?
- will PJ still operate in the concession?

Hello,

The Kwando upgrades will take place at Lebala.

The new CCA concession covers both NG29 and NG30 (though not necessarily all of the concession). Jeff Rann has sold the concession and will no longer be operating there.

Cheers,
Julian

As far as I can remember this concession was up for sale at$6 million. Oi was aof course primarly hunting. so game viewing will be a little slim for a couple of years. I am personally glad that CC Africa bought it!

So what happened there? Why should Botswana's most successful hunting operation sell its concession leases? I would expect a big outcry in the big game hunting community, but there is only silence, Jeff Rann's website is still online, and agents are still offering Jeff Rann's hunting safaris.

I just found interesting news which could be an explanation, see my "Am I dreaming...?" thread,
http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...p;tid=35090921

Anyone who has more info and can confirm this?

I don't know about the hunting situation at that concession.

But, what i did hear is that the new CCA delta camps will be priced very much ala the current Botswana boom ..... pretty pricey!

On the subject of CCA ----- they have a new "Chobe under canvas" and "Savuti under canvas" and the pricing on their website sounds pretty reasonable. I'm sure the gameviewing at these locations are pretty good?

In both areas CCA share game viewing with other operators and self-drivers. They certainly have booked some of the HATAB operator campsites.

I havn't been to Savuti, however I've read/heard quite promising trip reports. I guess there are less expensive options available if you book with one of the mobile operators in Maun or Kasane.

The Chobe river front is famous for elephants and birds. However I didn't like those many booze cruisers and to see cattle on the opposite river bank.
