Thanks kimac. My "feeling" is that I'd like to work directly with a USA company for the rental. In case there's a problem of any kind, they're headquartered here for resolution.

Tom, we used First Car Rental last year http://www.firstcarrental.co.za/#
and Avis in 2005. Both were excellent, no issues.

Thanks Carla.

gigib - instead of Avis SA I went into Avis.com reservations and then and got this- http://www.avis.com/car-rental/locat...CATIONCODE=JNB

This works easier/better than the Avis.co.za I gave above. And shows the VW Polo at base rate of $166 for 12 days in Sep out of JNB Avis.

Tom -

We are renting out of the Nelspruit/Kruger airport, code MQP. My rental confirmation shows $219 US which includes tax & CDW & theft & airport somethingorother, plus 180ZAR for a second driver. It was the avis.co.za site. Hope I won't have any nasty suprises! In my searches the last few weeks, rates seemed to be all over the place, had lots in the $400 US range. Maybe Avis is having specials all of a sudden?

Sooo, beats me!! The other avis.com site show 12 days Sep out of MQP, CDW & theft and unlimited miles rate of $328. VW Polo manual. Yours unlimited miles?

Anyway, enough. You do know to look the car over for any body damage when you get it. And when I drop/leave it I take photos of all four sides to show no damage.

Yes, unlimited miles! Does seem odd, but I was also getting quotes of less than $200 from carrentals.com, not including the CDW. I just felt a bit better going direct to the site.

Good advice about checking the car over, thanks. A funny story: When we rented a car in Ireland, we whacked off one of the side mirrors squeezing past a Guinness truck in a small village. Upon returning the car to the rental place, they tell us "Not to worry, every Yank does that!" and didn't charge us anything!
