Hi Hari

Yes, I am also really looking forward to Mashatu - especially to see animals I don't see at MalaMala, eland for example - since I have talked to a few people who have recently been to Mashatu and of course, knowing I do not miss a gamedrive!

Thanks Carla - hopefully all will be good for the cubs in July when you visit! Reading in the cyberdiary that only one Styx Pride cub seen and my heart dropped but next time the four were seen! They are so tiny! Also read that the Kapen Female is lactating, so hopefully even more cubs around next visit.

Kind regards

Kaye

Thanks for the heads up Kaye. I haven't been checking the cyberdiary lately as it wasn't updating, but I see it's back in action again. I have alot of catching up to do.

The Windmill pride, that is a new one to the area?

Hang on little cubbies!!! And the Rollercoaster Male too. I really would like to see him in person. &lt

Hi Lynn

That would be no! I do ride a bike at home, though not in the last 10 months due to a back issue which will hopefully be resolved within the next month!

Hi Carla

No, the Windmill Pride have been around since I have been going since September 2001. One of the older lionesses looked absolutely dreadful - thin and ill and I see that her body has been found, may she rest in peace! In May 2003, we found a dead lioness from the Windmill Pride and while the actual injury was found by Kruger Vets to be a buffalo wound to her rear end, the poor thing was riddled with TB.

They did seem to be in Kruger a lot for a few years, but are being seen now a bit more regularly.

Kind regards

Kaye

Hi Kaye,
Just catching up on the cyberdiary and read about that Windmill lioness, poor thing.

The day before was very intriguing (Jan 19)with the Styx pride, Eyrefield pride and Rollercoaster male. It must have been incredible to hear all the roaring going on.

Hi Carla

Yes, it was horrible to see that lioness - the poor thing must have suffered! She was so thin, so very ill and slowly starving to death!

Most odd with the prides - Eyrefield and Styx. We also were worried when we were there as the Eyrefield Pride (with cubs) was on the airstrip and the Styx Pride (without cubs) crossed over the Sand to the airstrip. All I could think of was the 9 cubs, and that clearly the Styx Pride would kill them all and it would have been 5 lionesses against 3 with the Male in the middle not wanting to fight either pride. Luckily nothing happened!

Carla, what date do you leave on your Southern Africa adventure? Time is passing, slowly maybe but still passing!

Kind regards

Kaye

Carla, no I thought the days seemed to be the quickest! You guys must be off the very beginning of July, so certainly getting closer!

Tom, I believe they are still unsure of the sex of all the lion cubs.

Kind regards

Good to know the nine cubs are still doing well. I sure hope those females make it to maturity. Here's a so-so photo of six of them and two moms taken last Sep 2007. http://tinyurl.com/2fsn38

reagrds - tom
ps - the Styx pride has a few cubs also I hope.

KayeN: Your pictures were fabulous, and I especially loved the birds, which I'm looking forward to seeing. I'm very excited because we are going to Mashatu, Mala Mala, and Phinda in January. We're staying in the tented camp in Mashatu, and I hope that won't be too warm. We could switch, I think, to the Main camp, but I really liked the idea of the tents. Do you think it'll be too hot? We substituted Pafuri for Phinda and I hope that was the right decision. Do you ever go to Rocktail Bay Lodge? We're ending the trip with some snorkling there.
Thanks, Nancy

one of the little Styx cubs died a couple of weeks ago will we were there. the other 3 looked very thin and our ranger felt that they would probably not make it. The lionesses are apparently not good 'mums' unlike the Eyrefield pride

Nancy,

I'm considering the same itinerary you just mentioned -- Mashatu, Phinda, Mala Mala. I posted an enquiry about travel & transfers between the three properties at:

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35117894

Can you provide any insights based on your experience in arranging this itinerary?

Many thanks...

Rick

Hi Nancy

Thank-you and yes, I also love the birds, which was not the case when I starting going to Africa. But here at home and in South Africa, I am bird obsessed!

I am also going to MalaMala and Mashatu in January next year, and am really looking forward to Mashatu. I already love MalaMala! I am in the Main Camp and I do think it will be very warm but I live in that climate, so no different to home for me!

I just read about the poor little cub from the Styx Pride! They seem to think the cub may have been trampled by buffalo!

Neither pride, Eyrefield or Styx have had success with cubs for quite some time. I don't think the Styx Pride lionesses are bad mothers but they are certainly tough mothers, but then that is the way of the bush - only the strongest survive!

Kind regards

Kaye

Thanks, Kaye.
Rick: [email protected] has arranged our whole trip for us. We fly from MalaMala to Phinda. She's extremely helpful, so I would suggest that you contact her with your questions. I found her in a post from CarlaM on another thread, and I've been very happy with what she's done.
