Just curious-Whats expensive as far as Africa goes?

We have just spent about 7-00 per person for 20 days plus about 600 for shots and meds for our trip and also are told we need to tip $15-20 per day per person to our safari guide.. Have we paid on the higher end or is this about average? This includes flight from Canada, all accomodations and food.

I would call that low average for 3 weeks including air. But if you are going to Kenya or Tanzania, it may be middle as they are less expensive than Southern Africa and I have only been to Southern Africa.

Sounds a bit low to me compared to what we have paid for mid-range lodges (Serena, Sopa etc) in Tanzania and Kenya. We usually come in around $400/day/person plus air for a private jeep, so for 20 days would be at least another $1,000 higher, plus air.

For that many days I think you got a good deal, unless you are sitting six in a jeep and staying at the cheapest lodges.

Somewhere I'd read a tipping guide and think it said $5-10.00 per day, per person. Being that one person performed a dual role as both our driver/guide during a recent trip I took to Tanzania, I chose to tip him at the end of each day with $10.00. Most others in our small group tipped at the end of the week, maybe some of them didn't. We weren't overly thrilled at his performance as driver/guide (on a scale of 1-10 most of decided he was about a 6), but for me personally I new he had 2 young kids and chose to do it that way. One day I felt just a bit under the weather at the end of our excursion and had to rush back to my room, forgetting to tip him, but he sure didn't let me forget it either and reminded me the next day...... thought that was a bit nervy to say the least, but resumed tipping him on a daily basis anyway.

If including int'l air from Canada, $7K sounds low for 20/days.

But where in Africa are you visiting? Country/ies? Accommodations where staying? Driving or flying between places on itinerary? Is this a private or group tour? And, what time of year?

ire
if you are talking about almost 3 weeks pure safari - i would say you were very lucky to get it that favourably.

if it's SOME safari nights and the rest self drive and mix of hotels and BB i would still say it was good value.

just give us some more facts in order to evaluate correctly.

Hello irecommend,
It doesn’t sound like a particularly low price to me, but I’d have to know how much the airfare is, if you’ll spend all the 20 days in national parks and reserves and how you’ll do it. If the most expensive safari I’ve taken as a solo traveller with a private vehicle would have been stretched out to 20 days, I still would have paid under $7000 including international airfare, but I don’t live in Canada.

It is a good enough deal that I'd love to know more.

Is the $15-$20 for just your guide or is that the amount recomended for guide and camp/lodge staff?
