Joe needs a hip replacement

Jambo,
I'm not sure if this is appropriate; it's not for me. I just feel compelled to let you know.

Because it’s our famous Kennedy, this may be OK to post? I'm doing this of my own free will; out of the goodness of my heart. I have nothing to gain for myself. It's all for a good and needed cause. If you had one you will know the pain that Joe is feeling. !

I hope this is not against the Fodor rules.

My friend Kennedy Muthoka of Waymark Safaris in Nairobi is a small tour operator and a great man. I wouldn’t trust anyone more deeply! I’ve known him for many years and booked safaris through him. Many of you Fodorites have as well.

I’ve been invited to dine at his home several times. I know his wife Val and his daughters well. He employs 6 - 7 driver guides full time. Kennedy is setting up a “Guides Medical Fund” at a local Nairobi bank … because …. his driver Joe needs urgent attention. Joe is a great guide and truly loved by all who have been with him. Kennedy cares deeply and want to help Joe and all guides in this position.

If you like to contribute, I would be honored.

If you have been guided by Joe, you have noticed his limp. He has some arthritis, but because of the intense pain he’s had lately, he went to see a doctor and found out that he must have a hip replacement. I saw Kennedy a couple of weeks ago and he told me. The lowest “bid” is around $10,000.00 for the operation!!! This is out of reach for Joe, as he needs to support his family with the little he earns in this down economy! But he won’t be able to sit and drive much longer!

There’s no health insurance or free medical care for those who can’t afford it in Kenya. Therefore, Kennedy is setting up a “Medical Account” at a local bank in Nairobi for Joe that will later also serve as a charity for Waymark Safaris for guides who need medical assistance.

If you want to contribute to Joe’s fund right now, you can send me a check and I will give the cash to Kennedy when I next see him on August 4th. I need your contributions by Friday July 10th. I will find out what the account number is and what bank when Kennedy has finalized these details and you can contribute directly.

There’s no pressure, only if you want to contribute: email me for my address to Kristina.Trowbridge at gmail.com if you want me to carry your funds in person now.
I'm sorry for this late announcement; I've been torn about saying anything, but for the sake of Joe and all the guides to follow him, I decided to post this. I hope it's not against the rules.
Asante Sana,
Kristina

Kristina, I second Tom - bless you and Kennedy both for your spirit of wanting to help and your kindness. As everyone knows, I too have been good friends with Kennedy and his family since 2006, he is indeed an incredible guide, as well as an honest and a caring person. I feel blessed knowing him - and for that, Leely - thankyou - that was all your doing! We are 'Grandma and Grandpa' to both his daughters, which warms my heart everytime I hear it. And this year, they even got to meet 'Uncle Jamie', which he really got a kick out of.

When I courier the USB travel drive down to you on Wednesday for Daniel that you are so kindly taking to Nairobi for me, I will be including a US ck for Joe's fund. It should reach you by Thursday which will give you time to cash it in order to bring cash to Kennedy.

Yes, thank you for asking: that is a dot betwen my names; it's so long! I do what I can, touching one life at a time. I wish that I could do so much more. As Kennedy said to me:

"My heart wants to do it, and not only Joe, others and others !! Joe's is quite a big challenge and it looks like once it is accomplished - It will be the start of doing serious "philanthropic things". There will be no going back !! "

Kennedy has already brought some fodorites to his village and will set up another fund for these desperately poor people as so many of his clients want to do something to help. His daughters want to be involved with this. They are only teenagers now, but what a good project for them! Bless him.
