If you could go to Tanzania in any month...which month would you go?

Hello fellow fodorites!

We had been planning a safari for June 2009 but life changed our plans. Now times have changed again and I am back to planning.

I am now not limited to the month of June and wonder if you could go to Tanzania in any month, what month would you choose...and why?

Hi, february would be the best month as the wildes would be dropping calves and the megaherd would be in the short grass plains area which would provide fantastic viewing

Mid-January thru mid-March, for the reasons Sonali74 mentions ... but ONLY if you spend much of the trip on the south Serengeti.

It depends on where you are going. I went south to Ruaha and West to Katavi, and would ONLY do that in late September/October.

This is what I'm thinking...does this make sense? We really want to see the migration herds:

Saturday, Jan 31: Arusha Arrival, Arumeru River Lodge
Sunday, Feb 1: Tarangire, Kikotu Tented Lodge
Monday, Feb 2: Tarangire, Kikotu Tented Lodge
Tuesday, Feb 3: Lake Manyara, Plantation Lodge
Wednesday, Feb 4: Crater, Ngorongoro Serena – upper room
Thursday, Feb 5: Crater, Ngorongoro Serena – upper room
Friday, Feb 6: Southern Serengeti, Ndutu Lodge
Saturday, Feb 7: Southern Serengeti, Ndutu Lodge
Sunday, Feb 8: Southern Serengeti, Kusini Tented Lodge
Monday, Feb 9: Central Serengeti, Private Camp
Tuesday, Feb 10: Central Serengeti, Private Camp
Wednesday, Feb 11: Fly Serengeti to Zanzibar, Fumba Beach Lodge
Thursday, Feb 12: Zanzibar, Fumba Beach Lodge
Friday, Feb 13: Zanzibar, Fumba Beach Lodge
Saturday, Feb 14: Zanzibar – fly home to London, UK

Friday, Feb 6: Southern Serengeti, Ndutu Lodge
Saturday, Feb 7: Southern Serengeti, Ndutu Lodge
Sunday, Feb 8: Southern Serengeti, Kusini Tented Lodge
Monday, Feb 9: Central Serengeti, Private Camp
Tuesday, Feb 10: Central Serengeti, Private Camp

This should be ideal for seeing the migration, probably at Ndutu and at the central Serengeti camp or possibly on the way to/from Kusini ... so long as there was some rain earlier ... we were at Ndutu 5 days in 2006 in late January with little earlier rain and saw wildebeests and zebras in the tens of thousands, and in late Jan 2007 after heavy Dec rains we saw them in the hundreds of thousands because the plains were green.

So what you are planning will be about as good as you can possibly plan, now just hope you get a normal rain pattern.

Is this for 2008? Has your agent been able to confirm space at Ndutu Lodge? I ask as from their availability chart, the lodge is full.

If not available, consider Olakira, Sayari South, EMC or Savannah Camps which should be located in the Southern Serengeti.
