We're going on a Northern circuit safari in November (9 days) followed by another 9 days in Zanzibar. We're looking at taking out the Flying Doctors membership for our trip, but are offered either 14 days or 2 months membership. Does anyone know if it is worthwhile taking the 2 months membership to cover us in Zanzibar - if indeed the 1000 kms limit even reaches there? Thank you very much!

Yes, Zanzibar is covered in the 1000km plan.

I normally recommend it if you are going to remote places and/or doing activities such as climbing Kilimanjaro or trekking and/or you are older with the potential for heart problems and such.

Even though 18 days you can probably take out the 14/day membership which is minimal cost. That's what we did for your 17/day trip in 2005.

But, you can always send them an email and specifically inquire.

I thought I would bump this up as I emailed Flying Doctors about which coverage to take for a 2 week safari and they sent me an area map stating that the $15 tourist membership would cover me. I am going to both Kenya and Tanzania; mainly Amboseli, Samburu, Massai Mara, Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongora. Just FYI.

Some operators offer Flying Doctors for their clients. It might be something to ask when researching which companies to travel with.

There are hospitals in Stone Town and also Dar. My sister had to see the doctor at the hospital when we arrived in Zanzibar (Malarone problems). It's a "third world" facility, but the medical staff seemed competent and the German tour operations manager based in Stone Town says that she uses it with no hesitations. In Dar, there is the Aga Khan Hospital, which could be reached via a quick flight out of ZNZ.

Zanzibar is covered in the 1000km plan, but premium is a bit higher than $15... check for additional due (believe only $10 - total $25/person) from Flying Doctors.

Medjet doesn't get you out of the bush. Therefore, you need Flying Doctor's.

Medjet has affiliates that can fly you out of remote areas but I got them to cover medical costs/flights to the hospital of my choice (usa). This cost as you know, can exceed $75k and they have no limit.
