Excellent driver/guide Nairobi/Kenya

I find this kind of review useful myself so would like to share our experience of an excellent driver & guide in Nairobi.

I found good reviews of Martin on Trip Advisor, so we booked him for a day to drive around Nairobi and see the usual sights. He lived up to the excellent reviews. Making arrangements by email was easy. As well as being an excellent, safe driver, with a reliable and comfortable car, he is extremely good company and it was a pleasure to spend time with him. We also had very interesting conversations about the city and Kenya and Kenyan life. He also took us to a great place for lunch, a little off the tourist trail. It was certainly a more relaxing way to travel compared to some of the hairy taxi rides we have previously taken in Nairobi!

We were so impressed we booked him for the afternoon on our return from Wilson airport before an evening flight, with the intention to drive out to Karen. However the Nairobi traffic was horrendous, at a standstill, even worse than usual (thank you President Obama, Nairobi will look beautiful for you after all these roadside improvements!) and we realised we would spend the whole afternoon in the car and if we did manage to get out of the city we’d be too stressed about getting back in time for the flight to enjoy it. We abandoned the trip and Martin was extremely understanding and gracious about it, and despite the fact that Martin had struggled through the traffic to get to us on time we had to insist on paying him something for his time. He also kindly made a couple of suggestions for something we could do on foot in the city.

We can truly recommend Martin as a great guide and a lovely person. We would not hesitate to use him on future trips to Nairobi and further afield.

Thanks Martin for sharing this (so funny but true about the President comment). What did you end up seeing while you were in Nairobi?

Hi Angelina
We've seen most of the usual sights before (Giraffe centre, Kazuri beads etc) and of course Sheldrick's is somewhere we will return again and again, but this time Martin (he's the guide, not me!) took us to Anselm Kitengela glass-making studios. It is a bumpy 7km ride, you need a 4x4, but also interesting to pass through the outskirts of Nairobi. It's only a small outfit but you can watch glass pieces being created and the buildings, shop, cafe etc are really quirky and all decorated with glass. Maybe too much to do if you only have a short time, other attractions are more concentrated around Karen, but we enjoyed it.
