My daughter and I are leaving in one month for our first safari to Tanzania. We have gained so much information from Fodors and are thankful to all the experts here. We are traveling with Thomson Safaris on their "Classic" safari, and here is our itinerary:

2 days at Tarangire National Park
1 day at Gibbs Farm
2 days at the Ngorongoro Crater and
4 days in the Serengeti!

We've been planning this trip for almost one year and we are so excited!

3 weeks from today 5 of my friends and I are leaving for our dream trip to Egypt and Tanzania. We've booked everything with Park East, which I've heard is an excellent tour operator. They've arranged it so that the six of us have our own vehicle and driver/guide for the entire trip. All of our meals are included also. This is really nice in case we want to change any of the activities. I'm nearly jumping out of my skin with excitement. I think half of the fun of this trip has been reading everything posted on the forums. Here's the itinerary:

Day 1 - leave Newark 4:40 p.m. (Hope I'll get some sleep on the plane)
Day 2 - Arrive Amsterdam 6:00 a.m. - we have a 15 hour layover, so we'll have some time to see some of the sights. Leave 9:00 p.m.
Day 3 - Arrive Cairo 2:10 a.m. Get a few hours sleep, hopefully, at the Mena House Oberoi Hotel. Go to the Pyramids of Giza, see the Great Sphinx and the Solar Boat Museum. Then on to Sakkara to see the Step Pyramid of Djoser. Then to Memphis to see the Alabaster Sphinx and the toppled statue of Ramses II. Dinner at the home of an Egyptian family. Overnight at the Mena House.
Day 4- Visit the 12th-century Citadel, the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, tour the Gayer-Anderson Museum, the Khan-el-Khalili bazaar. Visit "Old Cairo" and see the "Hanging Church", Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Coptic Museum. Overnight at the Mena House
Day 5 - Fly from Cairo to Luxor. See the Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings, Tombs of the Nobles, Temple of Hatashepsut. At night we go to the Temple of Karnak for the Sound & Light show. Overnight on the Nile cruise ship M/S Ti-Yi.
Day 6 - Explore the Temple of Karnak, and visit Temple of Luxor. Drive to Esna and reboard ship.
Day 7 - Ride horse-drawn carriages to the Temple of Horus. Reboard ship and sail to Kom Ombo to see the temple there. Overnight on ship.
Day 8 - Visit the Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan. Take a sail on a Felucca. After dinner go to a Nubian folkloric show featuring a whirling dervish. Overnight on ship.
Day 9 - Fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel. See the Great Temple built by Ramses II. Fly back to Cairo. Have the rest of the day at leisure. Leave Cairo 11:30 p.m.
Day 10 - Arrive Nairobi and on to Arusha. Explore Arusha National Park. Overnight at Mountain Village Hotel.
Day 11 - Travel to Lake Manyara. Go to the village of Mto wa Mbu. Visit local homes, schools, farms, etc. Overnight at Manyara Serena Lodge.
Days 12&13 - Explore Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater. These two nights at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.
Days 14&15 - Visit Olduvai Gorge and the Olduvai Museum on the way to Serengeti National Park. Sunrise hot air baloon ride over the Serengeti. I was just told that because of all of the rain, unfortunately there's not very much wildlife. Maybe that will change by the time we get there, because seeing the animals is the reason we booked the hot air baloon. Two days of game drives. Overnight at the Serengeti Serena Lodge, second night at the Kirawira Tented Lodge.
Days 16&17 - Two more days of game drives, which could be really boring if there are no animals to be seen. Two overnights at the Kirawira Tented Lodge (heard this is a wonderful place to stay)
Day 18 - morning game drive then fly to Arusha for the day before leaving for our flight home via Amsterdam.
Day 19 - Arrive Newark

I hope this trip will be as wonderful as I think it will be. I'm really upset about the rains and possibly not seeing that much wildlife.

I'd love to hear any comments and/or suggestions anyone may have.

I guess I'll add our itinerary also and many thanks to lynn, sandi, patti and everybody else who posts here with great info! This is our 3rd safari but haven't been to Kenya for 20yrs. We wanted to stopover someplace using our Delta miles but didn't want to take coats-hence, Dubai, a new route for Delta as of May 2007.

Oct. 28th LAX-ATL-DXB(Dubai)
Oct. 29th arrive Dubai 7pm recover from traveling and preparations
Oct. 30th Dubai Park Hyatt
Oct. 31st Dubai
Nov. 1st DXB-NBO Emirates Air
ov-night at Giraffe Manor
Nov. 2nd 1pm flt to MMara ov-night at Bateleur Camp
Nov. 3rd BC
Nov. 4th BC
Nov. 5th Mara Explorer camp
Nov. 6th ME
Nov. 7th flt to NBO Serena Hotel
Nov. 8th KQ to Kigali, drive to Gorilla's Nest(although may change to Silverback Lodge for 3nts)
Nov. 9th Gorilla trekking-GN lodge
Nov. 10th Gorilla trekking-Virunga Lodge
Nov. 11th drive to Kigali, museum, market tour, Serena Hotel
Nov. 12th KQ to NBO Serena Hotel
Nov. 13th NBO-DXB Park Hyatt
Nov. 14th DXB-ATL-LAX
Nov. 15th home

It ended up being more "high end" than I had actually planned on but then I thought our next trip to Africa was going to be Zambia or Namibia too! I'd rather go more frequently so next trip will be more reasonable price-wise.
