Cairo Hotels
Hi, everyone. I will be in Cairo for 5 days in December. Anyone has any suggestions on hotels? I'll be traveling alone - do you think I should be concern as a women? Should I try to join a escorted tour like Gate 1 Travel? My budget for hotel is $100/night. Please let me know. Thank you in advance.

You don't say when in December you are coming. If you will be here over Christmas, you may find the best hotels are full already. But, if you can, the BEST hotel in Cairo under $100 is The Longchamps Hotel in Zamalek. Try it first.

If you dress modestly and respectfully, you shouldn't have a problem as a woman. Remember that Egyptian women do not allow strange men to touch them, and if you will follow that example you will have more respect from the Egyptian men and less trouble. In other words, if they want to hug you, don't let them. If they want to put their arm around you for a photo, don't let them. It is seen as improper here and they will test the waters as often as possible with foreign women to see where and when she will draw the line. Draw it EARLY and you will find less trouble.
You can join a tour if you want to have everything all organized for you including what you will eat. Do it yourself if you want more input to your adventure and the experience you will have.

Hi,
While I was not traveling alone - I was with my Mother, I would not advise traipsing around on your own - we felt very obvious and I felt very uncomfortable with the staring an comments in certain areas. Cairo is not a walking city, the pollution is just too much to take, in my opinion.
I had a wonderful woman guide - Marwa Galal, who I booked through the hotel, but she also does private tours of the museum, pyramids, souk, and anything else. She is from Alexandria and can take you there as well. she is simply lovely, and I have nothing but good things to say about her.
Her details are: [email protected]
A dinner cruise on the nile was a fun way to pass an evening too.
Good luck - please feel free to contact me with any other questions.
By the way, if you can swing a day trip to Luxor - I would!!!!

Don't worry about your safety as a single woman. You may get a few cat calls (which will be in Arabic, so you might not recognize them as such.), but that's it. No worries about being assaulted or things like that.
If the cat calls bother you or you feel unsafe around certain men, find a family or other women & ask if you can walk with them. Of course, you should be properly dressed (no shoulders or knees showing in Cairo)
