Cairo accommodation location

We are planning to spend 4 days / 3 nights in Cairo and do the usual sightseeing.

Is it better to stay in a hotel in the city centre or near the Pyramids ???

What is your budget? We preferred the 4 Seasons in town.Just as many others prefer Mena House at pyramids.

There is nothing like waking up in AM and seeing pyramids from your balcony. Also convenient for early morning viewing/ticket to enter pyramids.

However, after you have seen pyramids, not much else in Giza. And you have to stay in Cairo to believe it - we got up at 3 AM for return flight to US and streets looked just as crowded as during day. Just walking around is part of the Egypt experience.

We stayed first night at Mena House - perfect after long flights - sat in gardens, looked across at pyramids. Then moved to Cairo for 2 nights. (Also 2 more nights at end of trip). If you don't mind switching hotels, then that is what I would recommend - if not, stay in Cairo.

Agree with Gail. Drink or lunch after the Pyramids at Mena House is pleasant, but would not choose to stay in Giza as nothing else. Of the better hotels in town, Marriott has good location and beautiful grounds. Rooms can be a bit 3 star, although some renovations. Also stayed at Royal Nile, which has now come under Hyatt management I think - rooms definitely superior to Marriott and great views down the Nile. Also very good health club & pool facilities. A new 4 Seasons was being built opposite and may be complete but Royal Nile much nicer as it juts out into the Nile and oyu do not get all the traffic that 4 Seasons gets or will get. Mgmargate I guess stayed in the 4 Seasons opposite the Zoo. OK for business and I am sure quality of rooms is good, but otherwise location is not great. Conrad Hotel has good location for shopping as next to big mall which has good fixed prices and overlooking river with very popular bar restaurant (with younger trendy Egyptian crowd) just opposite. Nile Hilton has certain charm around swimming pool and tennis courts but otherwise a bit dated. Rameses Hilton is horrendous location next to a motorway juntion and major bus station. Also bit past sell by date.

We spent 9 days in Cairo this past March at the Marriott Zamalek, and were extremely happy with our choice. We walked all around Zamalek, they have some great shopping down the main street, and don't miss Nomad, which is just 1.5 blocks from the Marriott - a wonderful little store, they served us tea on the balcony and they had gorgeous items from Egypt and around Africa. We also walked across the bridges and all over Cairo, just had a fantastic time. The hotel is stunning and was so much less expensive than the other nicer hotels. The many restaurants were excellent as well, as was room serving.
