We have stayed at the Diaghilev which was fine for our needs...We really enjoyed the stay. At that time they served breakfast at their sister hotel, the Rothschild, which I think may be nicer...
Both have a very different vibe than the big hotels on the beach. And they both have different types and sizes of rooms. We had a huge 2 bedroom suite with a balcony.
Check them out.

We enjoyed this hotel in a converted cinema. http://www.atlas.co.il/cinema-hotel-tel-aviv/ The neighborhood is great too.

Have stayed at the AL Boutique hotel on Rothschild Street. Close to everything. Breakfast in the morning.A small place but very charming and the service was outstanding. My new place to stay in Tel Aviv anytime we go there.
