We just got back. We were there on our honeymoon when the bombings occurred, and we never felt unsafe once. There are police everywhere. We had a tour group, but the police presence everywhere was heavy. The locals we met were very warm and friendly. No matter where you go you're going to have crazies. The majority of people are eager to speak to Westerners, and I found them warm and friendly. The only time I was actually afraid was when I rode a camel! What grouchy things they are!

My husband was offered 150 camels by a local who wanted to buy me... he's still wondering if he didn't lose out by keeping me...

Personally I think you'd be crazy not to go. We had the best time of our life and made some fabulous memories.

Spygirl,

have you ever been there? How can you say it's unsafe? we were THERE during the bombings and farflung's allegedly horrible demonstrations and we never noticed a THING. It didn't affect our trip in the slightest.

The people there are the warmest, friendliest you could ever hope to meet. English is a required subject in Egyptian schools, so most everyone speaks English, and they are eager to practice on Americans and Brits.

Not once did I feel unsafe. Everywhere I went there is a heavy security presence but it didn't ruin my trip, as you suggest it might.

We had a great time, and I really resent the fact that you are telling people that Egypt is an unsafe place. What do YOU know about it? It's no more unsafe than the US.

How many tourists are targeted in the US to be mugged or attacked because they are foreign or from out of town? I am certain it is more than those few who were injured in Cairo this year.

I am a young woman (and have been told attractive) who was there on my honeymoon. I was THERE for a month WHILE this stuff was occurring - and not once did I feel unsafe in any way.

Spygirl, you are speaking totally out of ignorance and possibly out of prejudice as well. Please DON'T talk about what you don't know.

Everybody, it's perfectly safe. Go, and have a GREAT time! We had the best time of our lives.

I just returned to the U.S. (June 7, 2005) from a 17 day tour of Egypt (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Sharm El Sheikh). I had a fantastic time. The sights (Pyramids,Sphinx, Nile, Temples, Cairo Museum and others) are wondrous and the people are warm and friendly. When asked, I identified myself as American and I was warmly welcomed.
I felt very safe and comfortable in Egypt. It was an unbelievable adventure and I am already planning a return trip.

We just returned from a 15 day tour with
Grand Circle. We stayed in Cairo at the Marriott Hotel and then flew up to Luxor to board a boat for 7 days. We never felt unsecure. The tour buses had
a security guard ride in the front seat.
It is an adventure we will never forgot.
Seeing all the Temple was great. We took
a side trip to Alexandria on a train. That was nice seeing the sights along the way. In Egypt they all live in Apt.
There is very few single dwelling.
Only 5% of the county of Egypt is developed as the other is desert. We lived in Lancaster CA in the Mojave desert but this is a real desert. Hope
all of you interested in seeing Egypt will go as it is very safe.

Which tour company did you use. We are planning a 16 day trip this coming Dec. Also, which cruise ship did you go on? Did you like it?

We went on the Grand Circle trip. It
included 5 days at the Cairo Marriott and then 7 days on the boat. Then another day at the Marriott before we flew back to NYC. It included the airfare too. The cost was $1795.00 per
person. It was a great trip and Grand
Circle took care of from beginning to
our return to NYC. Security was very good. We felt safe all the time.

Anitas:

I used Travel Egypt (http://www.travelegypt.us). This tour company is also known as South Sinai Travel. I was very pleased with their services. Their representatives and guides were excellent. I customized the Pharaoh's Nile tour to include extra days in Luxor and Aswan and an excursion to Sharm El Sheikh. The cruise was very nice (Luxor to Aswan - 4 nights). The rooms were large and the food was good but the entertainment in the evenings could have been better. I also scheduled a week in Jordan through a Jordan Tour company (Jordan Direct Tours). They were also very good. Jordan is wonderful (Aqaba, Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea and Amman)and I would love to return someday. I felt safe travelling in both Egypt and Jordan.
