B & B Maun
I saw elsewhere someone asking about B&Bs in Maun - I'd like to know if anyone has a review on Discovery Bed and Breakfast, which is also known as Betty's B&B. Sorry of this has already been answered but I can't remember where I saw the question!

I did ask that question in another thread but didn't get an answer, but made a mistake and asked about Discovery Lodge when it is in fact Discovery B&B. Would still like to hear if anyone has visited. (Have been keeping my head down after getting a right old telling off for changing subjects in a thread, didn't know it would cause so much trouble)

Tockoloshe,
That right old telling off I think had to do with underlying tensions and not just an unrelated question, from what I could tell. I find this forum (or any of them) is not so different from the baboon tree, really.
What are you all doing in Maun?
I am thinking someday I'll book flights to/from Maun and visit the Wilderness & Kwando people there and see what I can book last minute, hoping for some deals. Of course I'll need a place to stay in Maun and am interested in what you come up with.
Threads take all sorts of roundabouts and tangents all the time, instead of sticking to the subject. I am often guilty of contributing to that, recently recounting a nearly naked in front of the Fed Ex man story in the midst of a captivating trip report. Oops, I'm doing it again.

We're doing a 4x4 camping trip driving to Maun from Windhoek but would like to stay in a comfortable bed some of the time! We'll be passing through Maun and we'd prefer a B&B instead of a hotel so that we'd maybe get to talk to the locals more. We hope to do a scenic flight over the delta if we're not going to do a fly-in to a camp (see another thread!). Then we make our way through Moremi to Kasane. Rest of trip to sort out, thought we'd get this bit organised first and work out what to do from there. We'll see if anyone can help us with Maun - already had some suggestions for hotels but as I said we'd prefer a guest house or B&B.
Unfortunately I missed the Fed Ex/naked story!

tockoloshe,
I apologize if I was one of the people you think gave you a "right old telling off" on the other thread. My comments were not directed at you, and I certainly didn't mean any harm or antagonism towards anyone. I really just wanted to hear more from the OP about his trip.
We all change subjects and ask unrelated questions on threads, but when somebody's trip report gets totally hijacked I think they are less likely to return and complete the report. And for the record, you were not, IMO, the person who hijacked that thread. As Lynn mentioned, there were/are underlying tensions with some of the other posters on that thread, who frankly IMO opinion should have taken their disagreement elsewhere, not somebody's trip report.
So, I will apologize to rockdassie for hijacking this thread as I have absolutely nothing to offer on B&Bs in Maun.
Lynn,
I like your idea of showing up in Maun and trying to negotiate a deal. Let me know if you do it, and if it's successful.
tockoloshe,
I'll see if I can find the Naked FedEx story for you. I remember it well.

This buildup to the story is a bigger deal than the incident itself. I thought the Fed Ex guy was my husband, opened the door, told him to come in, and he did. I was in my underwear. The nonchalant way he acted, it must happen every week.
The 4x4 camping trip sounds exciting and affordable. You'll have to keep us posted on that one.
It will probably be 5 years before I do a Maun trip and see what I can find. Wildcatzoo did it and I've read about others who have had success with that approach. I think you have to be flexible. It would be my first Africa trip that is not completely planned out day by day. That uncertainty alone is intruiging. I wouldn't consider just heading to East Africa and seeing what kind of safari I could put together at this point. But Wilderness, Kwando, and those types are reputable enough for me to try it. The worst that could happen is I see more of Maun than I had ever planned on.

bettys b&b is a verry small but good place, the only drawback is it is situated in the middle of a residential area, no view.
Back to the bridge on the tamalakane river has some meru tents with beds, neat and great views over the hippo pool, King fishers dive from the old wild fig trees.Food is plain but good, bar is sometimes to good.

The location of Back to the Bridge looks great - but I see it's classed as 'backpackers' accomodation. I've nothing against backpackers but we're a little older (!) and not sure if it means everyone will be partying late into the night, or tucked up by nightfall - what's your experience?

You can try Marina's. A nice simple place with a great restaurant/bar that attracts a nice cross section of people form Maun but not a wild place. Marina is a Maun girl and my family loved the place. We lived in Botswana for 3 years and became friends with Marina, her husband Paul (an Aussie) and their daughter Ashley. Reach Marina at [email protected]
Enjoy. We'll be staying there this summer when we go back for a visit

Thanks to all for ideas, I think pdurkin has suggested the ideal place for us at Marina's, it's exactly what we were looking for. If you have any more gems like that elsewhere in Botswana can you share them with us? You must know the best places if you lived there for 3 years. We generally prefer guest houses to hotels.
pdurkin - do you mean you are visiting Botswana in the northern hemisphere summer or the southern hemisphere summer (ie their winter)?? We are going in August.
