Arusha - Tsavo

Help please!! Does anyone know if it's possible to go, flying I guess, to Ithumba, Sheldricks Camp, just for the day. We'd prefer not to stay overnight if possible.
Has anyone stayed at the elephant camp?

Jan has stayed at Ithumba http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34754641

I would say the only way to go to Ithumba for the day from Arusha would be to charter a plane. There are no scheduled flights to Ithumba or any part of Tsavo East.

Thanks Patty, We're just trying to do 1000 things in 5 minutes.
Our babies will be at Ithumba by the time we finally go to Africa.

... and consider if you're in Arusha, Tanzania and have to get to Tsavo in Kenya... different countries, need a point to stop for immigration, you'll require a visa. Even with a private charter, would be best flying from Nairobi, Kenya.

Did you check with the Sheldrick group how, cost, etc.? If doable and not cost prohibitive, would your schedule provide the time (probably 2/days minimum) in Kenya?

Sandi thanks.
We're checking with Sheldricks.
It would appear we may go in from Mombassa or even go to Amboseli and a long drive across.
We're not too keen on a private charter.

You can cross the border Directly East of Moshi, the road to Voi if you go overland. Much quicker way to get to Tsavo then going through Amboselli or Mombassa. The crossing is quick and easy.

That border is Taveta, but it's still not possible as a day trip from Arusha.
