thit_cho - Chris Mercer's position is that any trophy hunting is the same as canned hunting. If you read much of the site you can see he's really against all hunting. The canned hunting reference is to get people in the door.

Favor, if that's the case, I will not sign the petition -- the law of unintended consequences as is immutable as the law of the jungle!

For what it's worth, about 10 years ago, I tried to date a "sport" hunter. I went into it with a very open mind, trying to learn as much about it as I could so as to not bring in any preconceptions.

I hung out with him and his friends, whom I got along great with, and went out into the fields, woods, etc, with them on several occasions.

However, upon watching how they 'baited' the animals to entice them close to their stands, it began to take it's toll on me. I watched as they would put feed down almost daily, in the same spot, so prey would know where to return.

I will never understand how this is 'sport' and whether it's "canned" or in the field, the guides and hunters know how to unfairly and unjustly trap their prey.

It isn't sport or trophy, it's just people getting their jollies from killing. I don't see any difference between 'sport' hunting or intentionally hitting an animal with a car except the means with which it's done.

I will gladly sign the petition to ban "all hunting." I, for one, oppose it and would like to do something about it.

"If we do not do something to prevent it, Africa's animals - and the places in which they live - will be lost to our world and her children forever."

Nelson Mandela

IMHO and I do appreciate all the viewpoints, every little thing helps, whether it be donating financially or signing a petition (if you believe in the cause) despite its wording.

Religion has been responsible for some of the greatest atrocities around the globe, from the crusade to date! Why in conservations name would you want to involve members of the cloth? Besides many hunters themselves give praise before going to the slaughter, check the bushmen practices, the aboriginals, the north American Indian and and and....So how will they be deterred by the alterboys?

So whats the big deal, controlled trophy hunting, canned hunting, whatever...it is way less impactful on the environment than a wild hunt in the Selous as an example. Look at Iraq, take out the leader and you have chaos, OK, so taking out a big manned lion is not quite the same, but chances are that its removal will have negative impact on the pride or prides in the area, we do not even know yet how that will do to dilute the gene pool. Rather pump a tame lion full of lead; That way there is no impact on the existing order. Right?

Now lets all have a group hug and then hug a bunny!

You are kidding, right??

If not, no disrespect and you're entitled to your opinion, but please don't include me in that group hug. >-

Looks like a tame lion is still regarded as something different than all the tame animals that daily go into the slaughter houses.

dumb question but here goes. If you sign a petition against what the minister of whatever is for in a country like south africa, is it possible they can put your name on a list that you will not to be allowed into the country, kind of like the U.S. no fly list?

Certainly depends on the petition. How do you handle this in the States?

don't know what powers certain petitions would have in the U.S. if any, but I'm sure if you pissed the right person off you'd end up on the No-Fly list or an IRS audit.
