60 Minutes piece on gorillas
Hi Fodorites. Thought some of you might be interested to know that 60 Minutes aired a piece tonight on the plight of the mountain gorillas in Congo. Anderson Cooper went to Congo (and did a trek in Rwanda). I was sad and terrified to learn that the park rangers had to stop tracking the gorillas in Congo altogether because of the ongoing civil war. They have not tracked them in over three months.

A terrible situation indeed that no one knows how the 200 DRC gorillas are doing, if they're alive, if any more have been killed, etc.

Thank you all for that info on the 60 minutes piece, especially akimyai for the video link.
It is just appalling to see what is happening to these amazing creatures, but it is hopeful that the more publicity the situation gets, the more informed we are, the more we can do to help.
My husband and I are going to be doing a trek in Rwanda in September 2008 and this just makes us realize all the more what a unique and amazing life experience this will be!

I just watched it this morning. yep it makes me pretty said. I only wish the Congo gorillas head over into Rwanda.
But I also think how much gorilla tourism could do for Congo if they were able to get it going.
A few weeks ago on Animal Planet, Natalie Portman went to Rwanda to see the gorillas also.

i received a newsletter from nat' geo. this short film about the murder of gorillas in the congo was included. it's awfully hard to watch.
