How to best reach the Lofoten Islands from Oslo, Norway? (four day trip)

I am planning a trip for two, to the Lofoten Islands, to golf at the Lofoten Golf links and explore the islands. We arrive in Oslo on Thursday, June 9th, and leave for the islands on Friday morning, staying till Sunday night.

- where would you advise flying to from Oslo?
- is it possible to travel around Lofoten without a car?
- any recommendations on things to do? places to see? accomodation?

Thanks very much! very excited about this trip, just a little puzzled at destinations.

The closest airport to Lofoten Golf Links is Svolvær Airport: http://www.avinor.no/en/airport/svolvar

Widerøe is the only airline serving Svolvær: http://www.wideroe.no/ They fly between Bodø and Svolvær.

You should fly on SAS (http://www.sas.no/) or Norwegian (http://www.norwegian.no/) from Oslo to Bodø and from there with Widerøe to Svolvær. SAS and Widerøe are in close cooperation and you can book the full flight on either web site.

I highly recommend a rental car. There is no airport bus, and getting between Svolvær and the golf course by bus is only possible on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The details are complicated and explained in Norwegian only on the Lofoten Golf Links web site.

If you only was going to visit one place on the Lofoten islands for sightseeing, my recommendation would be Reine. If you have time to see more places, I suggest Å and Nussfjord. While driving to these places you will see a lot of other interesting places and lots of amazing nature. If you stay in Svolvær, I suggest you spend one of your days to drive to Å and back. This will bring you to all the places named above.

In Svolvær, visit the restaurant Bacalao and try the dish by the same name. Should be had with a cold Mack beer.

There is a good visitor information center for Lofoten in Svolvær. It is located on the town square, next to the harbor. This is also where many of the Svolvær hotels are located.

I really appreciate your advice, and will look into a night in Reine as well, and certainly will taste Bacalao.

Flights to Svolvaer are very expensive in combo with the other costs of travel- it costs half as much to get to Harstad-Narvik. What do you think of flying there and taking the bus from Evenes to Svolvaer on the Lofast?

You can certainly travel through the Harstad/Narvik airport. There is a twice daily bus from that airport to Svolvær. The trip takes around three hours and departure times are 10:40 and 16:30.

This bus continues from Svolvær all the way to Å. You can stay on the bus until you reach the point where the road to Lofoten Golf Links start, but unless you have made arrangements with someone to pick you up there, you will be stranded.

I think your best option is to contact Lofoten Golf Links and ask their advice. They offer accommodation close to the Golf course, and I can imagine that if you you chose to stay there, they will be able to arrange transport from the bus stop to their location.

Hi Arvin,

It's Engin,

First of all, thank you very much for your great tips. Thanks to you we are inspired and definitely want to visit the villages that you've mentioned above by using the flights that you've recommended.

We just need your help to get some more insights about this exciting trip,

Our main objective is seeing and taking photos of amazing Northern Lights which is like a dream to us. We will arrive to Svolvær (3 of us) and stay 6 nights around there. We will rent a car to visit these villages.

We have some questions to be clarified and kindly need your advices:

Are these villages that you've mentioned called Lofoten Islands? or is an another place.
What do you recommend us to do to see the northern lights?
Which villages are the best place to see the lights?
What kind of activities do you recommend us to do? especially interesting for photographers
How about the accommodation in these great villages?
How about the prices for renting a car?

Many many thanks in advance for your help,

Looking forward to hearing from you,

All the best,

Engin Gokten

Arvin comments on these questions in 2011. I suggest you start your own thread.
