Drive along the Columbia River
My wife and I are easterners - we're taking a drive over three days in October from Hermiston to Portland along the Columbia River. Which is the prettiest route - Highway 14 on the north side of the river or I-84/30 on the south side? Suggestions on where to stay long the route? Thanking you in advance...

Stay on the Oregon side. See more waterfalls than just Multnomah. http://www.columbiariverhighway.com/
Stay in Hood River. You may also want to take the loop south from Hood River up the east side of Mt. Hood (Rt. 35) with a stop at Timberline. Turn right at the end of 35 onto US 26 down to Sandy.

Stay on the WA side until Hood River or Cascade Locks for views of Mount Hood and to stop at the Maryhill Museum and Stonehenge memorial. After you cross to Oregon, take the "historic" Columbia Gorge Hwy which leaves I-84 just before Multnomah Falls and which will offer spectacular views of the Gorge as well as access to all the other waterfalls en route.
If time allows, double back to drive up the Hood River Valley to Mount Hood, then into Portland on US 26.

Yes, drive on WA-14 for the most spectacular views of the gorge and Mt. Hood.
A variation of Gardyloo's plan would be to cross the Columbia at Hood River and use that town as a base for a day trip to Mt Hood and Timberline Lodge driving on OR-35.
Spend the night in a king room with balcony in the east wing of the Hood River Best Western. You will be right on the river and in the morning you will be served a good included breakfast in the hotel's pleasant riverside dining room.
In the evening, have dinner at Celilo and ice cream at Mike's.
In the morning, drive into Portland visiting Multnomah Falls and the other waterfalls along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

happytrails has it right, but consider staying a night or 2 in Hood River and exploring the town, and the gorge from there. We like to cross at Bridge of the Gods and hit the Stevenson town microbrew Walking Man. Also great fish ladder viewing at Bonneville dam. You will back track just a bit in the gorge but then can head S on 35 from Hood River and stay a night at Timberline (or just check it out and the drive into Welches and stay at Resort at the Mountain-do you golf? Weather migiht still be ok). Then come into Portland!
