Columbia River Gorge from Hood River to Portland

In late August, we'll be in Hood River with one full day to drive to Portland. (We fly out the next morning.) I'd greatly appreciate suggestions on which route to take, places to stop, drive times, and how much time to spend at the various stops. We do enjoy photography and hiking (although there won't be much time for hiking this time). Thanks!

We stay in Hood River often. These are some of the things I like to do while there:

*Drive OR-35 from Hood River to Parkdale for views of Mt. Hood going and Mt. Adams returning.
*Drive the loop Moisier to The Dalles on Old Highway 30 returning to Mosier on 7 Mile Hill Road.
*Drive to Biggs, cross the river (possibly visit Maryhill Museum or Maryhilll Winery), and drive back to Hood River on WA-14.
*Visit Multnomah Falls and Vista House on the way into Portland on I-84.

Our favorite restaurant in Hood River is Solstice Wood Fire Cafe.

Where will you have been before arriving in Hood River? Where are you renting the car?

We will have been on the road for awhile, starting and ending in Portland. Immediately before arriving in Hood River, we will have spent 2 nights in Crater Lake. See:
http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...n-9-nights.cfm (I tweaked the final itinerary such that on Aug 28 we'll drive straight from CL to HR because the HR hotels had a 2 night minimum.)

Check to see if you can get 1 night at Timberline Lodge on the south side of Mt. Hood. Spend the night before your flight out at the Embassy Suites or other nice hotel near PDX.

Obviously the waterfalls along the historic highway are a big draw (and not just Multnomah - look at Latourell for example.) If you have time, you could do the fruit loop - http://hoodriverfruitloop.com/ or at least sample it.

Especially if you have kids in your party, a visit to Herman the Sturgeon at the Bonneville hatchery is always a real treat. (Not bad for grownups too.) http://www.oregon.com/attractions/bo...-fish-hatchery

For my money, the best view of the gorge is from the Portland Women's Forum pullout a little west of Vista House - http://www.oregonstateparks.org/inde...age&parkId=119

If time allows, en route from Crater Lake to Hood River, stop at Maryhill Museum - a quirky and fun place - Rodin in the sagebrush. http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/ It's on the WA side just west of US 97. The WA side between US 97 and Hood River is more scenic than I-84 on the OR side.

Thank you all!

happy, couple of follow up Qs. Keeping in mind that we have one full day to explore the Gorge and end up at our PDX hotel (sunset is 7:50pm), how much time would need to allow if we did the Moisier to Dalles loop with stops returning by 7 Mile Hill Road? (Google maps says drive time alone is about an hour to do the loop.) What's to see on 7 Mile Hill Road? Or, would it be better to drive from Dalles to Hood River on WA Rt 14?

And if we drove from Hood River to Biggs Junction on a loop, how much time would we need for that, factoring in photo ops and stops at Maryhill Museum and a winery?

Is the drive out to Moisier or Biggs Junction more beautiful than other stretches of the Gorge west of Hood River?

Gardy, nice pic!! We'll see if we can do some of the Fruitloop en route to Hood River and no kids.

Thanks for the Vista reference. That's a must do after Multnomah Falls.

tom, we'll drive up to Timberline if we have time en route from Crater to Hood River. I had a room there but had to give it up when Hood River insisted on a 2 night minimum. We don't have time for 1 night in Timberline and 2 in HR.

I'll see what everyone has to say in reply to these Qs, but do you think we have time to do the following in one day:

1) leave Hood River by 9:30am (we could leave earlier) and drive to Biggs Junction on the Oregon side, and either cross the river and visit the Maryhill Museum and nearby winery OR do the 7 Mile Hill Road back to Hood River;

2) drive to Multnomah Falls but help me with the route: if we end up doing Maryhill Museum we could take either WA 14 and Bridge of the Gods to I-84 to the Falls OR should we cross back into Oregon at Hood River and take I-84/Rt 30 (are they the same road??); but if we do the 7 Mile Hill Road instead, should we take I-84/30 to the Falls or get on WA 14 in Hood River and go to Bridge of Gods to I-84 to the Falls?

3) drive and hike to Latourell Falls;

4) drive to the Portland Women's Vista;

5) then drive to our PDX hotel?

Are we missing any must sees? Too much?? Suggestions?? We don't mind being active.

Thanks so much!

North of Madras take the left fork onto US 197 over the Criterion Pass to The Dalles. The scenic thing in The Dalles is a very old church with a tall spire that riverboats used for navigation.
The only thing Biggs has going for it is a Pilot gas station.
Take the Historic Columbia River Road instead of I-84.
