Please Help with Travel from Oslo to Molde and back

I'm going to Molde, Norway this summer and plan on attending Moldejazz; I'm extremely excited for this. I also plan on staying in Oslo for a few days after the festival. I have the round trip plane tickets from my location to Oslo because they were far cheaper than flying into and out of Molde.

My questions are these:
1. I plan on riding the train from Oslo to Andalsnes. How would I get from Andalsnes to Molde? I've seen mention of ferries and buses that go from Andalsnes to Molde but, I'm not sure how to go about using one of those services once I get there.

2. How about the return trip from Molde to Andalsnes? I would assume the same thing in reverse.

3. Would it be more simple to just get a flight from Oslo to Molde and back? I thought the scenic views from the train would be nice since it is my first trip to Norway.

Bus from Åndalsnes or plane from Oslo probably will be your best bet. I don't think there is a direct ferry link Åndalsnes-Molde.

For bus info, go here:

http://www.177mr.no/?div_id=28&pag_id=28

Note that to find Åndalsnes you will need to be able to enter the letter Å/å (pronounced roughly "aw"—it is a separate letter, not an A with a diacritical mark, and comes at the end of the alphabet). "Andalsnes" with a regular A won't return any stations.

To make å/Å on a Mac the commands are option-a and option-A. Don't know the commands on a PC.

The bus station you want is Åndalsnes jernb.st. (Rauma) [jernbanestasjon = railway station]. Bus ride takes about 1.5 hours.

Schedule only goes out about 4 months right now.

The train Oslo-Åndalsnes takes 5.5 hours, so you are looking at 7 hours travel time, plus waiting time in Åndalsnes between the train arrival and the bus departure.

Flight time OSL-MOL is just 1 hour, and the flights are direct, so that is much simpler. But of course you have to add in time to get to and from the airports and time to clear security.

The train ride is supposed to be scenic, so you might want to take the train up and fly back.

Thank you very much for the help. I was looking at the time differences and I did agree that the flight would be much more simple...ha ha.

I think I've decided on the train mainly because of the scenic views. I've never been to Norway before so, I want to see as much of it as possible. I've also heard that the trip from Dombas to Andalsnes is worth every cent spent on the train ride.

One more question for you:
Which bus station would I look for in Molde? I found the right bus station in Andalsnes but not sure what to look for in Molde.

Thanks again.

The central bus station in Molde is Molde Trafikkterminal [trah-FEEK-tehr-mee-nahl]. You will also get that location if you just enter "Molde" into the box for the station. Bus 420 follows Highway 64 from Åndalsnes to Molde Trafikkterminal several times a day. I think there is a bus timed to leave shortly after the train arrives.

An alternative is to go by boat part of the way. For example, you can take Bus 482 from Åndalsnes to Vikebukt [VEE-keh-bookt; oo like in "boo" and "boot", not like in "book"] along the E136 highway and then take the 15-39 boat from Vikebukt HB (I'm guessing that's Hurtig Båt = Fast Boat) to Molde hb. kai (kai [rhymes with "high"] = quay). Taking a different route each way will give you a little variation in scenery.

I'm sure you could get a taxi at either the bus terminal or the ferry terminal. Your lodging might be close enough that you could walk. If not, and you don't want a taxi, look up the address of your lodging on a map (like Google Maps or Mapquest) and then find it on the bus map, and see what the closest bus stop is.

To do that, start from the bus search screen, but don't put in any stations. Instead, zoom in on Molde. You will see more bus stops appear. Find the location of your lodging, and then look to see the nearest bus stop. Then you can put that in as your destination station and see what buses you need to take.

Or you could just email your lodging and ask them how to get there!

(As an aside, just to show you the difference between A and Å—

Den Hellige Ånden [dehn HEHL-lee-geh AWND-ehn] = The Holy Spirit

Den Hellige Anden [dehn HEHL-lee-geh AHND-ehn] = The Holy Duck)
