Safety in Sydney

Overall Sydney is a fine city with few problems - you'll see some drunks (more public drunkenness than you might see in the US) and - especially in the Kings Cross areas - other unfortunates that live an undesirable life.
Friday and Saturday nights can be yobbo night, when young "louts and loutettes" from the Western suburbs come into Sydney to misbehave. Now that's not a cold and hard fact at every step of the way, but it is not unusual, and they can be so out of their skulls that neither humour nor reason prevails if they egg each other on to do bad things.
Not to scare you - but crossing the street if you see a gaggle like that is smart. Lower George Street (from Town Hall down to Central) and Kings Cross is where you want to keep an eye on things, but overall you'll enjoy Sydney with few worries.

We just got back and we took careful notice of how we felt as we walked around.
At no time did we feel at all "unsafe". We walked from The Rocks and Circular Quay to China Town and around, both day and night (9ish). We saw nothing that would even let you think anything unsafe was going on. We walked through Hyde Park day and night as well. It is well lit and has art installations set up and was well peopled.
We walked several different routes to and from these places and probably covered about 10km of streets. Not a single hassle, sight etc.
We had dinner in some pubs. I think they would get rowdy later on, but still safe.
By the way, the pubs were very cheap to eat in. $10 for steak and chips, fish and chips, Meatballs etc. One had free pizza if you bought a drink.

Sydney is safe for the most part. If you are catching trains late at night, there is a guard's compartment which is indicated by a blue light - that's the safest to travel in:
