I have posted before about my upcoming honeymoon but we have decided to make some changes to it. In an attempt to give us a more relaxing honeymoon, we have decided to forgo Siena/Florence, and go South to Amalfi. Our itinerary will be as follows:


Sunday, April 21 - Depart New Jersey (overnight flight)
Monday, April 22 - Arrive in Rome, around noon
Tuesday, April 23 - Rome
Wednesday, April 24 - Rome
Thursday, April 25 - Rome
Friday, April 26 - Rome
Saturday, April 27 - Depart Rome, and travel to Amalfi
Sunday, April 28 - Amalfi
Monday, April 29 - Amalfi
Tuesday, April 30 - Amalfi
Wednesday, May 1 - Amalfi
Thursday, May 2 - Amalfi
Friday, May 3 - Depart Naples, arrive back in New Jersey

However... I was curious what would be recommended on the best place to stay? We have looked at Positano, and the town of Amalfi, but we have also considered staying in Sorrento. I did read that Sorrento is a good home base if you are looking to do day trips. We will travel to Pompeii and Capri. And if we stay in Sorrento, we will then make a day trip to the Postiano and perhaps Amalfi.

As far as culture, food, accommodations, night life... what would be recommended? If we stay in Positano, is it easy to do day trips from there?

There will many others with far more information than I , but for the record I think Positano is one of the most romantic cities I have encountered. I have not stayed in Sorrento but found amalfi a little bland in comparison to other towns in that area. It is my understanding is it easy to take ferries from one port to another. Good luck and congratulations on your marriage.

From Sorrento you have the train to Pompeii and Naples, the ferry/hydrofoil to Capri and the bus down the coast road to Amalfi and Positano. From Positano you have the bus up or down the coast road - and perhaps ferries - depends on the schedule/day of week. (So early in the season the bus shouldn;t be too crowded and the traffic along the coast is slow - but not awful yet.

When we have been there (late May, a couple of times) we stayed in Sorrento and had a car - so we drove to visit the tiny towns along the coast. Sorrento is a a larger town - with a better choice of hotels, restaurants and shops - but is a place to stay rather than a place to tour.

Going that time of year I would definitely ask the hotel is the pool is in operation yet - and would assume it may well be too chilly for seimming from the beaches.

Normally, I would not split time, but in this case, I would consider two or three nights in Sorrento and two or three in Positano or even a night on Capri, all depending on what you want to do/see while there.

At the time of the year that you are visiting, travel along the AC will be relatively easy. I agree with kmh7 that Amalfi doesn't really have enough to hold you for several days and at best is a half day visit. Sorrento is a larger town but doesn't have the charm and atmosphere of Positano, so that would be my choice every time.

Hire a car and you can do the sightseeing trips easily.

A: I would fly into Naples, spend some time relaxing and getting used to Italy in Amalfi and then go up to Rome, where the pace is somewhat less relaxed.

Amalfi is served by the SITA bus between Sorrento and Salerno as well as the ferry.

I would stay there and daytrip to Capri, Paestum, Positano and Sorrento.

To get to Rome, unless you want to pay for a limo to Naples, I suggest taking the ferry to Salerno. The ferry docks about 3 blocks from the train station.
