Sorrento is a larger town with more hotels, restaurants and shops. It is the end of the line for the local train and has beter ferry service in season.
Amalfi is further down the coast, is much smaller and needs to be reached by bus - or ferry - depending on when ferries start running on the various routes - and where you are coming from. Naples? Rome? With all the benefits and detriments of a smaller town
If you are planning on touring Pompeii and Capri it will be easier from Sorrento.

The 2nd week of April is still very early in the season for the AC. In Sorrento, there will be more transportation options, and more hotels, restaurants and shops will be open.
Re: hotels, go to venere.com and limit your search to the historic center of Sorrento and to your budget. Double-check your choices at www.tripadvisor.com and also double-check the location on Google maps.
