Renting a Motorcycle, are there places we should avoid?

We are coming to Phillipsburg, St. Maarten by a cruise.and would like to rent a couple of motorcycles to tour the island. We have a few questions.

1. Is this a safe thing to do on St. Maarten?
2. Are there areas that we should avoid?
3. Can anyone suggest a reputable motorcycle dealer?

Thank you !
Peter

You can rent a Harley-Davidson here on the island - see the following website: www.h-dstmartin.com/rentals.

Words of advice :

1)Stick to the main road - there really is only one anyway !

2)Be very wary of other road users (mainly the motorbikes and scooter riders), 90% of them are completely mad !

3)Watch out for the potholes and speed humps - both can be lethal !

4)Enjoy yourself !

Update: My friend and I arrived on the island on Tuesday March 6th with four other riders from the RCCL Navigator of the Seas for our tour. Glen, a representative from the rental company brought us to a location in Philipsburg where we chose from among a half dozen used Harley Davidson bikes. I chose a Softail Classic with about 11,000 miles. Glen led navigated us out through the city onto the main road, where we embarked upon our journey around the island. As it has been said here and on other forums, the drivers can indeed be distracted, and the roads are pretty torn up - but I will say that we enjoyed a great ride, and had a much better time looking at the scenery and feeling the wind in our faces than we would have had we gone shopping with the wives! We were both pleased with the ride, Glen's guidance, and would definitely do it again.
