Philadelphia Travel Guide

Philadelphia Sports & Activities

Philadelphians are perhaps the most outrageous, most dedicated sports fans in the country. They deserve a notorious reputation for boorishness—booing Santa Claus, applauding opposing teams players' injuries—but this is merely a front for fragile hearts continually betrayed over the years by their beloved but faltering teams.

The Phillies World Series championship in 2008 reminded this city what winning feels like, and has only made fans hungry for more. Years are not marked by the changing of the seasons for Philadelphia sports fans, but by the sports in season: the Eagles, 76ers, and Flyers keep them busy from fall through spring, when the Phillies step in for those long summer afternoons.

But Philadelphians don't just watch sports. The multitude of bikers, runners, and rollerbladers you can see on the streets and in parks attests to Philly's love of the outdoors.

On weekend mornings (7–noon) from April through October, the West River Drive is closed to car traffic, making this a prime spot for sports enthusiasts. In the afternoons, only the section from the Sweetbriar Cutoff to the East Falls Bridge is closed. Breathtaking trails for running, biking, and hiking thread through Fairmount Park. Walking along Forbidden Drive, a gravel trail along the Wissahickon Creek, you'll understand why artists from Thomas Eakins to Edgar Allan Poe felt inspired to immortalize the park in their work. Shafts of sunlight filter through the trees, while birdcalls complement the dense chorus of crickets bellowing from the mossy woods.
