Outside Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Medora, gateway to the park's South Unit, may have a population of only 96, but it is a walkable town with several museums, tiny shops, and plenty of restaurants and places to stay. Its Wild West history is reenacted in a madcap musical production each night in summer. To the east is Dickinson (pop. 28,000), the largest town near the national park. North of Dickinson and about 35 miles east of the park's North Unit, Killdeer (pop. about 825) is known for its Roundup Rodeo—North Dakota's oldest—and its gorgeous scenery. Killdeer is the place to fill your tank, because there isn't another gas station around for 40 miles. Williston (pop. about 30,000) is 60 miles north of the North Unit, just over the Missouri River. The Amtrak stop nearest to the national park is here.
