This white-clapboard inn on the National Register of Historic Places was built as a private lodge back in 1901. It's starting to show its age a bit, but is full of Outer Banks character. The rooms in the modern wing are good for families. The large rooms in the Crow's Nest, on the third floor, have cathedral ceilings and look out over the island. One- and two-bedroom villas ($$$$) with full kitchens, living rooms, and laundry facilities are also available. Pros: quiet taste of old Ocracoke; spectacular views from the Crow's Nest; walking distance to shops and restaurants; heated pool. Cons: starting to show its age; no-frills rooms and some with no television.
